http://cjonline.com/stories/041302/usw_nation.shtml#.VqiTwvkrLIUMOSCOW -- A Moscow court on Friday sentenced 12 Russian men in the kidnapping of an Israeli boy and cutting off several of his fingers, to five to 10 years in prison, Russian media reported.
Adi Sharon, 12, was abducted in August 1999 in Moscow, where he was visiting his businessman father, and taken to Penza, about 350 miles southeast of the Russian capital.
The boy's father Yosef was also captured, but freed a few days later on condition that he pay $8 million for his son's release. Sharon was held in a narrow, sometimes cold and wet pit in a basement, his feet shackled.
After receiving a partial payment of $50,000, the kidnappers cut off one of the boy's fingers under anesthetic and sent it to his father with their demands for the complete ransom. When they weren't paid, they cut off another finger without anesthetic and also videotaped it and sent it to the father.
Sharon was freed in May 2000 when Russian security services stormed the house where he was being held. He was badly malnourished and couldn't even stand or walk.
The Interfax news agency said that five of the defendants who took direct part in the kidnapping were sentenced to eight to 10 years in prison. They included the defendant who was filmed cutting off the finger, who received a nine-year sentence.
The defendants plan to appeal, the Interfax news agency reported.
