Why did Leo Frank kill Mary Phagan and why do a lot of Jews support him?

Just came across a documentary on this case last night. I don't quite get it. Was it because he was a Jew that other Jews were supporting him? I get that he was lynched also, when his sentence was commuted. Still, I don't believe that warrants sympathy towards a murderer. I only tuned in half way into the documentary, but I'm curious.

He was innocent.  The Black guy killed her.  This has been proven.
