I remember hearing a particular establishment type rabbi accused Rabbi Kahane of endangering Soviet Jews in his protest actions to try to free them.

Rabbi Kahane answered him back, okay, you don't like my tactics, but I ask you how many times did you hold a public fast and prayer session for the plight of Soviet Jews all the time that I was here.
The unspoken answer was zero.

At the very least, if we are not in a situation in life where we can do the activist tactics of a Rabbi Kahane to save the Jewish people, we should pray on their behalf.

The video I linked to above just has a stress of praying for other individuals. I am taking this idea one step further to pray for the Jews on the national level.
