On Arutz Sheva I have read, that the father was a 100 % bolschewik, who worked priviliged and well paid  for the dictator Siad Barre. As Barre was loosing the civil war and had to flee to Kenya Omar family went with him.

My friend comes from Somaliland. He told me stories of Barre you cannot believe. He was a serious mass murderer. This is why Ilhan Omar is in the Demonrat party. There she feels at home among the fellow democratic socialists.

Somaliland rebelled against Barre and fought later successfull against Al Shabab and IS. Today the region in north Somalia is basically independent. Economy runs well. It is like Kurdi North Iraq.
