There was lots of hollow talk of 'equality'. Persecution was the reality.

Read the whole thing:

Read the non-fiction book Sobbato about a Jew imprisoned for 20 years for teaching Torah . Or the suffering of the Friekeder Rebbe at the hands of the Bolsheviks, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yosef_Yitzchok_Schneersohn there was also the Yevsektsiya whose only purpose was to persecute Jews http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevsektsiya

While it is true that Jew-hatred has long been a feature of Russian culture, the mistreatment, persecution, and prosecution of Jews inside the Soviet Union was not uniquely anti-Jewish to the exclusion of all other religious communities within the Communist States.
There is some truth to the Communist's claim of "social justice" and "equality"; provided you understand that all are to be treated equally and with equal justice under the Communist legal system.
Translated into plain English, that means that any and all religion was essentially forbidden by the state, for only the teachings of Marx/Lenin held ultimate truth for all.  In addition, Communism declared all ethnicities and allegiances other than to Communism to be null & void.  In their place, the Communists installed The New Soviet Man, the supreme Socialist Internationalist with no loyalties other than to Communism.
So...in the twisted neologisms of Marxist-Leninist theory, it is true that Jews were treated equally with every other Soviet citizen.

My grandfather of blessed memory lived in Russia during Stalin Y.S. and he said that Stalin closed down all the synagogues and shot to death or shipped to a Siberian death camp the Rabbis and leaders of the congregations.  He did the same thing to Jewish writers and those who practiced religion there publicly or anyone who was suspected of saying something against the Soviet State.    Children were taught by the schools to report their parents if they said anything against the state.  During his era there was also a massive famine in which millions starved to death and my family also almost starved to death.  My grandfather said that during that time his cousin was the Cantor of a synagogue that was closed down and he immediately ran thousands of miles away to the other side of Russia so that they wouldn't do the same thing to him as they did to the other Cantors or Rabbis of the congregations.  There was immense fear among Jews at that time until the end of the cold war and even the regular Russians were terrified during the Stalin era.  My grandfather said that whole families would simply dissappear from existence and no one would say anything as to not be a target.  Rumors had it that the government would come in the middle of the night and ship these people off to a Siberian death camp where millions were killed.  Even after Stalin Y.S., the government would still arrest anyone who practiced Judaism publicly like Rabbis so they were scared for their lives.  Jews had to practice their religion in secret and they were forced to work on the Sabbath or they would be shipped to Siberia or simply lose their job and starve to death as all jobs were controlled by the government.  My father was taught in secret by a secret Rabbi in Russia that would go to his house.  The Jews had a secret assembly in someone's house on the Jewish New Year to pray and that was the only time they prayed the whole year since it was dangerous.  They went in one at a time at different times of the day as to not look suspicious and no more than 10 men were in this meeting.  The Russians had street sweepers that were really spies and that is why they had to act so secret.  Shabbat candles were lit in secret with all the shades closed and religious articles were hidden.  They had a secret Shochet that would kill small animals so they could get occasional meat.  Basically it was like hell to live under communist Russia as a Jew and very difficult to preserve your religion without immense self sacrifice.  That's why the majority of Jews living in Russia lost their Jewish identities and very few remained religious like my father's family.  My father said that after he left they allowed some synagogues to open but they were really spy places where the government would gather information about the Jews and spy on them.  My father said that during the cold war, the Newspapers in Russia never mentioned that Israel exists.

People, Aggression is a Nazi troll, likely from Whorefront. He made a number of postings saying that the saint Jonathan Pollard was a Soviet spy and deserves death. I have no idea why he wasn't banned, but the mods should be reminded of this and do so now.
