"Chaim was discussing a Hebrew Club..." has been moved to the brand new board of the same name: The JTF Hebrew Club (http://jtf.org/forum_english/index.php?board=52).

I'm thinking we need to categorize everybody's level of Hebrew here and figure out a way to pair people up and do this via internet. I assume that most people know how to read Hebrew before they speak it. I also had this on the same thread.
1. Don't know how to read.
2. I'm ok at reading but need more practice and learning.
3. I can read well with the vowels, but forget about it without the vowels
4. I can read it with out vowels decently but don't understand a single word
5. I can read it, but i'm so-so with speaking it
6. I'm a Hebrew master...can read and speak it like well.
-
I'm Level 3..I can help anyone on level 2 or level 1.
-
I'm level four. Today I learned that efetz means zero because I had to give a number to someone in Hebrew. Here is my hebrew lesson to everybody for today.
0 - Efetz
1 - Echad
2 - Shtyim
3 - Shalosh
4 - Arbah
5 - Chamaish
6 - Shaysh
7 - Sheva
8 - Shmonah
9 - Taisha
10 - Eser
-
It would be interesting if Chaim started each week's ask JTF with a two minute Hebrew lesson. I know I would probably learn something from it.

Taisha! that's #9...aahhh...
ekhod, shtaim, shalosh, arba, khamaish, shaish, sheva, shmona, taysha, eser! woohoo!
Mention it on the ask jtf for Chaim to do a quick two minute lesson on Hebrew each week..something simple for the gentiles and secular Jews to learn.
-
I just suggested it. Let's see how this thread goes. I'm hoping it will be a good opportunity for me to learn a little Hebrew.
-
Can we convice Chaim to give all the Nyc Jtfers interested in learning hebrew an in person once a week class? I am sure Chaim would be a great teacher.
-
it's worth asking, but he won't have time to do that. nor would many of us be able to agree on a time.
the best way is to pair up. and then change partners when necessary.
-
Even if it is only once a month, it is worth having Chaim give a lesson.

no, but still...he will suggest an audio CD to learn Hebrew and that he would not make a very good teacher.

I actually think Chaim would be the best teacher. If not, he would be the most entertaining. That would encourage people to stick with it.

Yeh, but Chaim has a life and a very important job. I'm sure he would love to teach us, but has to focus on other things especially to find a way into Israel. I know that he would mention there are so many other Hebrew teachers in NY that are more qualified than him who can do it for all of us (but that can get expensive i'm sure). I like the idea of him maybe doing a brief 2 minute lesson on askjtf...but...2 minutes a week isn't enough to be great at Hebrew either...just a taste..
Unless someone can come up with something better, i think that two or three people should pair up. someone at a higher level can help someone with something on the lower level and go on fro there.
HOwever, if one is goign to tutor, then he/she needs the proper material to tutor with. If i were teaching someone how to read Hebrew, i would take the prayer book and make that person read a certain important prayer over and over again. And the thing is, you can't do that over the internet..it needs to be done in person.

Every noun is a female or male, there is no "it" in hebrew for nouns
For exemple "the blue table is nice, i like it"="the table blue is nice, i like him".

KEEP IN MIND I"M PROBABLY WRONG BECAUSE I DON"T SPEAK HEBREW
Shouldn't it be "the table blue nice I like"?
HaShulchan Kachole Yaphe, Anee domeh
or is the table a he?
HaShulchan Kachole Yaphe, Anee domeh hoo

The sentence suppose too be like that :
Hashulachan kachol ve yafe, ani ohev oto = the table is blue and beautiful, i love (like/love) him .

Can you translate the following in Hebrew?
If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife. So from my personal point of view, take an ugly girl to marry you.

I don't know how you Israelis cope with it all. Just having to hear those muslim animals screeching through the loudspeakers at the Kotel would send me into a phsycotic, 3D, technicolour, medievel rampage.
-
Wow watching our Israeli members translate all the Hebrew really makes me want to learn it now. I think we really have to have a organized JTF Ulpan here in NYC. Sort of like when a bunch of high school kids organize and get a driving school to give them drivers ed. We need to get this organized and get the hebrew classes rolling.

Brainwashing, brainwashing and brainwashing again. We are taught to love and feel compassion towards the Arab Muslim nazis since day one. According to the media – we are the bad guy, Israeli army is an "occupation army" that takes over "Pal@stinian" territories, Israeli pioneers are shown as "land robers" and anti-democrats, the Supreme Court is protecting the Arab killers making us afraid to even dare to defend ourselves, we have enemy-agent traitors in the Knesset (!) who want to destroy us, whom the media welcomes with great respect and honor in each station and channel, and of course,- we are always to blame, we descriminate, we oppress, we abuse..
The outcome of all this is naturally a whole disordered people with self-destructive tendencies, mental problems, twisted minds and a very hard state of stupidity,- causing them to feel guilty, humiliated and ashamed on every bit.

Can we organize a jtf ulpan in NYC for all the jtf members on here that want to attend? I feel that is my only way of learning hebrew. If we get enough people interested, we could find a teacher and it would cost less as well. I hope their is a good response to this.
-
I'm making a flash game to learn Hebrew, i'm copy and pasting Hebrew Phrases and their meanings from websites and you have to match and create your own sentences. I'll hopfully finish it in about 2 weeks, with loads of different levels.

That is great Sarah. I can't believe how righteous you are considering your circumstances and the fact that you are literally risking your life talking to us. I hope you are freed from the shackles of Islamic life soon and that you will be free to live life the way you wish. I know how hard your situation is, the fact that if your parents get mad at you they could kill you. One of my neighbors are a jewish, super anti religious family. They have a few kids and 2 of the sons have recently become very religious. They have grown payis and they are very into learning torah and stuff. The parents are totally horrified and are not happy with their sons but they still love their children no matter what. Even though they are upset that they became religious, they will always love and do whatever they can to help their children. I think their is no reason to be upset if someone becomes a religious jew but that is not the point here. In an Islamic family, if the daughter dates a man the family doesn't approve of, she is killed. I really hope you leave your parents sarah.
-
The thing is I love my parents as well.
What are payis? :)

We know you love your folks, little one. That's what makes it so hard for you. :)
Payis are the long sidelocks or earlocks seen on some orthodox Jewish men. There is a mitzvah about not marring the sides of their beards.

Oh, yes, i didn't realise that was what you called them. A few years back, i asked the Islamic studies teacher at our school, why orthodox Jewish men had the sidelocks and she told me that it was a belief that they would lifted up to heaven by them and the payis would unlock the doors? Is this true? :)

I've heard of grabbing someone by the 'bollocks', but never the 'sidelocks'!

Beginners can learn first, than come to the Forum at the Hebrew Club and ask more knowledgeable members.
