The twin suicide bombings in the Moscow subway that killed 40 people and injured 64 may be only the opening shot of a broader fight with Russia to establish not just a Caucasus emirate but re-establish the ancient Islamic Emirate of Khurasan, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
Ancient Khurasan included the present-day Central Asian countries of Turkmenistan, Uzekistan, Tajikistan, as well as major portions of Afghanistan and parts of Iran and Pakistan.
Khurasan's history reflects its population of nearly every ethnic group of Indo-European and non-Indo-European origin. They include Turks, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Mongols, Tajiks, Pashtuns and Pashais.
Increasing evidence suggests the training of the Muslim Islamist militants who are waging a resurgent jihad in the North Caucasus that includes Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia in southern Russia may have its origins in Pakistan.
The latest bombing in the Moscow subway is seen by security experts as a resurgence in violence by Islamist militants in the North Caucasus, led by Dokka Umarov, the self-proclaimed emir or leader of the Caucasus Emirates.
The previous attack in the Moscow metro by the Chechens was in 2004.
"The Russians should be worried, very worried, given these attacks from within from seasoned guerilla fighters who have been using other campaigns against the West as training for what could become a long, drawn out struggle," one security expert said.
Security analysts believe the training for this resurgence of Chechen Islamist militant violence is part of a broader plan of al-Qaida to create turmoil and unrest across the Central Asian and Caucasus region.
