Title: Jtf Members internet connections.
Post by: DownwithIslam on January 24, 2008, 08:26:48 PM
Hey everyone. I was wondering what internet service provider everyone is using here.

Good question.  I was wondering this.  I would like some alternatives.  I hate having to rely on my incompetent, affirmitive action cable company where something seems to go wrong every other day. O0

I have Road Runner speed... through time warner!
The Best and Fastest connection... besides FIOS, which is not available in my area.

Tiscali broadband. Polite Indians manage to sort out the very few problems, if any at all.

I have roadrunner cable internet.  Very expensive but with so much bandwidth I could share my connection with 15 people!

Using Cox Cable, I have a 15 mbit connection, it's ok.

At my work however, we have a OC3 (Fiber Optics), fun downloading torrents at fast speeds. I love my job.

Hehe, I have fios for the last year and a half. I used to have roadrunner. To tell you the truth, I don't really feel it to be faster than road runner even though I have the 30mbit down/5mbit up fios package. I don't think it was wise to make the switch as the fios installation consisted of removing the old copper wire from my house to the pole which means that the only phone company I can ever use is verizon. I think it's illegal and it sucks for me.

Yes, I have the RoadRunner too, but I still use AOL because I'm used to it.

Ambiorix, Roadrunner in Queens NY is 10mbit down/ 512kb up. They used to offer 15/768 and 20/1 for more money but people werent getting their advertised speeds so temporarily they are only offering the 10/512 package now for 45 bucks a month.

Cohen, you cant download torrents on cox? I will tell you the truth, their is very little increase in performance with my 30/5 fios connection over my old time warner rodrunner connection when using emule as I still have to download off all the sources. I have confirmed that the fios is giving me the advertised speeds at speedtest.net

Verizon is very good. They offer a few different Broad Band speeds all good. The modem comes both wireless and wired and I am able to run 4 systems on it at one time. I have had three on at one time and it works fine.  The best part of the deal is I can take my lap top out in the yard in the summer and the range is well over 100 feet from the modem. The basic package is very reasonable only slightly more than dial up.

Ambiorix, verizon fios offers speeds all the way up to 50mbit down/ 20mbit up. Thats fast but not needed by most people. You really need to be transferring a tremendous amount of data to make that worth it.

I download torrents on Cox, but i'm on a business line, maybe they regulate it for home users? I am members of private networks and normally cap out my connection which is fun.

I doubt Cox would regulate your connection, you can do anything you want with it. When I had roadrunner I abused the line a ton and nothing ever was done. It seems America has the fastest connection speeds.

Japan has some of the fastest connections in the world, same with South Korea. They are wired for Fiber everywhere, lucky bastards.

Cohen Fios is not faster than all cable companies. For instance, the entire nassau and suffolk county and parts of manhattan and brooklyn are serviced by cablevision which is OptimumOnline. They offer 30/5 connections which are up their with fios. Fiber is not always better.

Not referring to FIOS, FIOS isn't the only fiber optics provider. I'm talking about a fiber connection looped to my work office. We are at OC3 connection which is full 100 mbps (about 3000 dollars a month).

These speeds are necessary because I run web servers/sell servers/colocation which I need to partition the space for clients and active streaming for our clients websites. There is plenty left over for me however :-D

I don't think that makes any difference.
Fast internet is not absolutely necessary for political activity.

I am supposed to get 1.5mb/sec but in my actual tests I get 1.1 mb/sec.  No complaints here as I can download an mp3 song in 4 seconds.

Jdl4ever, your connection is not fast and you cant share that type of speed with 15 people believe me. Even if all of them are merely browsing the web, it prob wouldn't work well at all. If even one person is running torrents or emule, nobody would even be able to browse the web. I though you had the 10mb/512 package which is more dough.

Yeah I was about to say, FIOS well...FIOS is limited to the speed Verizon allows it's users to download, Fiber is just what they chose to allow their consumers to connect to their datacenter.

Also you will only download as fast as other webservers will allow you, Torrent is a great way to test your download speed with a bunch of seeders and small ammount of leechers.

http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html  List the actual speed you get and not the theoretical maximum that the company claims to give you.  I actually get a maximum of 3.15mb/sec when I run the test on the main computer, before I checked in on my laptop using wireless.  I rechecked the documentation and I am supposed to get 5000/384 as per the company but in reality I don't get that at least not at this time of day.

Actually your getting exactly what the company is selling you, the company is advertising in bits. When you download a file, you are downloading in bytes. There are 8 bytes in a bit. Divide the total number of bits by 8. For example if your company says they offer a 10mbps connection, do 10000 divided by 8 and that will tell you the number of bytes you get.

Actually JDL4EVER, Time warner recently changed their speed brackets so I think you are mistaken about your speed. 1.5mbit, 10mbit are all that are currently offered. Look at this link and scroll down to where they display their internet pricing. This should make it clear.

Jdl4ever, try to unplug the power from your cable modem and then plug it back in. Also if you are using a router, even if its plugged directly to the ethernet ports, crappy ones still slow down speeds. D-link routers are very good in general. I have had bad experiences with netgear. I am replacing my old dlink with a linksys now so I will see how it works. I got a great deal on ebay so no harm even if it sucks.
