Three death row prisoners have been executed in Japan, the authorities have announced.
The justice ministry identified the men as convicted murderers Masahiko Matsubara, 63, Takashi Mochida, 65, and Keishi Nago, 37.
They were hanged at separate prisons in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka.
Human rights groups are critical of the secrecy surrounding executions in Japan, one of the few industrialised countries to retain the death penalty.
Relatives are told only after the hangings have taken place and this is just the second time the names of those executed have been publicly announced.
The first was in December 2007, when three men were executed.
Campaigners remain critical of Japan's continued use of the death penalty, but opinion polls suggest the policy is supported by an overwhelming majority of Japan's population.
"For extremely vicious criminal cases, public opinion holds that death sentences must be handed down and carried out," Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama said.
"We have considered a variety of factors so that we can carry out executions in a methodical manner, rather than thinking about the intervals and the timing," he said.
Nine people were executed in Japan in 2007. Friday's three executions are the first this year.

Never knew Japan had the death penaly
-
They love keeping secrets ;)
-
What's wrong wtih a death penalty against brutal murderers?
-
The death penalty is a righteous method to get rid of murderers, rapists, pedophiles, drug-dealers,
and comparable types of criminals.

Good for Japanese! That is why they have such a beautiful and lawful society!
No wonder they still support Mullahs ::) No different to Mullah Iran.

But killing people isn't nice. It offends others.

Depends on who's getting killed...
Did you hear about the disabled women in Iraq who were given bombs to blow themselves up?

you shall not kill.
But what with someone who killed?
An eye for an eye, i supose

My previous comment was an attempt at sarcasm.

I would talk with the orthodox Jews on this forum about this...there are times to kill and times one shouldn't kill.

"A time for peeeeeeeeeeace, I swear its not too late." Funny, that hippy song never said, "A time to kill."

They have a right to get rid of these criminals. But hanging? Its so barbaric.
We stopped hanging people in the 20s I think.
Its just so weird for me to see that other people are still hanging people, its seems so wild-west/old fashioned.
hanging normally was done by letting the person fall, so that the neck breaks.
In that case, it is not more barbaric than a gunshot.
i think gas/electrical chair/venom are sometimes barbaric too.
And for certain cases, I think a slow death, is preferable,
if the criminal was really inhumane in his killing-methods himself.

well, I guess its because I'm not used to living in a society where people get hanged.
Sometimes if its not done right, the person will suffocate to death.
I take no gladness in seeing someone have a slow, painful death.
Even for people as hitler?
i think it would be ok to make his death barbaric.
Anyway, maybe discussing execution-methods is unsuitable, for a religious forum

murder: kill intentionally and with premeditation; "The mafia boss ordered his enemies murdered"
Kill: the act of terminating a life
Killing a person in self defense is not murder, neither is the death penalty which is punishment for a persons crimes.

Perhaps we could use each method in equal measure. For example, a firing squad could be given misaligned weapons to ensure that none of the bullets cause death, then the condemned could be hung just enough to almost choke to death, then cut down, & resuscitated with an oxygen mask full of just enough cyanide to make them start to turn green, then give them lethal injection of all the wrong stuff, so that they're in excruciating pain. Then, have the telephone ring and the warden will answer it and announce "It's the Governor...STOP THE EXECUTION!". (big gasp heard from all the witnesses & executioners, etc...). Then a clergyman goes over to "speak to the spiritual needs of the newly freed prisoner...and then he says, "WE LIED!"...AND YOU DIED!" "HA HA HA!"...Then the prisoner is strapped into the electric chair and slowly roasted at low to moderate voltage; the full current is let loose after about an hour and a half, and after he's dead someone can put the roasted meat in a guillotine and chop off its head.
The following day, Grilled Brisket will appear on the prison lunch menu.
The final few hours prior to the scheduled execution time can be used to blast high decibel audio recordings of the Devil and souls burning in hell, and holographic imagery of Satan and eternal hell fire tortures can be shown in his cell in order to calm the condemned.

At least some nice intelligent humorous answer.

I have new found respect for Japan.
I don't care if they hang them, shoot them, stone them or anything else just get rid of these murders.
-
Prisoners should be executed only after they have been in jail for 20 years (at least) because the wait for your death is much more painful than just die.

I would like to execute them, if you give the command...
but isn't this a bit morbid for a religious forum?
-
Death would be preferable to being held prisoner by the japanese.
Those bamboo manicures aren't much fun.

I think it makes sense.
If someone is getting the lethal injection, its more of a punishment to know that they will spend a long time in prison with no possibility of escape and one day, they will be executed.
Then instead of being all cynical (as some killers are, even when they will be executed) they have a long time knowing that they are living in crappy conditions only to end up killed for their crimes. They will have all that time to sit in prison and think about what they did. Its more painful than an actual painful execution.
You'd be surprised how positive people can be in a prison.

Actually, Torah Jewish Law is different than the various legal systems of modern Western countries.
The Talmudic Sages made many comments and elaborations on adjudication for serious crimes such as murder.
Among them: They declared that the commonly spoken Biblical admonition of "An Eye for an Eye and a Tooth for a Tooth", which is an inaccurate translation from the Hebrew original which states "For an Eye...Eye"..."For a Tooth...Tooth" must be considered a demand for monetary and/or other compensation to one suffering from the intentional or unintentional harming of another's person or property...so that should someone blind another, they must pay and compensate to an amount which a court would consider adequate to repay such a disabling injury, etc...
For the crime of murder: The Sages declare that Torah demands an eyewitness to the actual event must accuse the perpetrator in court. For example, if some passerby heard screams from a house, and from the house ran a man holding a bloody knife, then the one fleeing the scene may not be charged with murder, because no eyewitness saw the actual murder...they only saw someone fleeing on foot, who may or may not have committed any crime...they might have been the first to encounter a murder victim, and in panic picked up the murder weapon and run hysterically to get help, etc...merely "circumstantial evidence" can not incriminate for taking another's life in Jewish Law.
In addition, should a person be charged with murder and convicted by the testimony of eyewitness, the eyewitness must not only witness the murderer be stoned to death, but must cast the first stone at the condemned! This law was to prevent frivolous charges...making such a condemnation so heinous that the accuser must be personally willing to execute the condemned.

Exactly I would opt for death, then to be alive around them thats for sure.
