Title: Poll: Who will McCain pick for Vice President?
Post by: Chaim Ben Pesach on March 11, 2008, 11:13:59 PM
                                                                                                       בס''ד

My pick is Mitt Romney. McCain hates him, but Romney has many advantages that no one else has:

1. Romney is popular among the Republican and conservative base, including the radio talk show hosts.

2. Romney is young enough for a Presidential candidate (60) to help with McCain's age issue.

3. Romney is an expert on the economy at a time of great economic turmoil.

4. Romney is a strong fundraiser. Since Barack Hussein Obama has raised almost triple what McCain has raised so far, this is a serious issue.

5. Romney is a strong debater, and an effective speaker.

6. Romney has already been vetted as a presidential candidate, so there will probably be no dark surprises that will be revealed about him. Dark surprises are among the greatest nightmares when picking a running mate.

7. Romney will make a McCain ticket competitive in Michigan, which currently is likely to vote Democrat. Romney grew up in Michigan and his father was a popular governor in the state in the 1960s.

I could go on, but I think this makes Romney the strongest pick. So that's my guess even though it seems difficult to imagine because McCain really hates Romney. But politics makes strange bedfellows, and McCain is an opportunist who wants to win.

Now let's see what our members think.

I wish he would take Huckabbee, but I'm sure he won't

I hold my nose at the possibility of it being Colin Powell if Obama wins the democratic ticket and it seems that McCain is an underdog because of the African American thingy...

I do hope it is Romney or some other half way decent republican.

I'm with you Chaim. I would have liked to see Hunter for front runner however when he fizzled out I really wanted Romney to get the nod. Now that we have McCain as the party choice I think seeing Romney as VP may give the ticket what it needs.

Following the logic of Dr. Dan I think that Condoleeza Rice seems like a perfect fit for McCain.

He can prove that the Republican party is truly "progressive" by having a black female as his running mate.

Wasn't Condi's name mentioned a while back as a possible Presidential candidate?

I seriously don't think that Colin Powell will be plucked from relative obscurity to run alongside with McCain.

But then again are the people willing to rally behind a VP candidate from the Bush administration?

And this is too radical of a thought even in these crazy times.

Your argument for Romney is very convincing Chaim. I wish this wasn't the case, but I rarely disagree with you.

I like Huckabee as a potential VP candidate but realistically it just won't happen... Romney is my 2nd choice!

I believe Mitt Romney will be the choice,   with Colin Powell the next likely possibility.   Both have a high profile.

Mitt Romney probably makes the most sense from the standpoint of McCain getting elected because his presence on the ticket would likely lead to most Conservatives voting for a McCain/ Romney ticket.      Also,  I don't believe Romney's presence on the ticket would take away the segment of the Independent voter base that he currently has.     I'm not as confident that Powell would boost Conservative support at the levels that are needed for McCain to beat the horrific Socialist Democrats.

I heard that Jim Mcgreevey Gov of Mississippi is on the short list of VP Choices. Whoever he chooses the sooner the better so they can form a relationship to attack the Democrats before then even get a nominee. This will be just like 1968 when the Democrats took until the convention to pick a nominee 1988 was similar with the Racist Jesse Jerkson sticking it out until the convention

It would be great if he picked Romney as his running mate.  Pawlenty is on his list, not sure how high up on it though.  He's sort of a moderate Republican from a moderate state, like McCain, so maybe Pawlenty would help with getting votes for purple states like Minnesota or Michigan.  He differs from McCain on immigration, he wants to get rid of sanctuary cities so McCain might pick him for that reason as well.  I'm not sure if McCain is strongly considering anyone at this point.  I think it would be the best for the Republican party if he picked Romney.

Not that I want it, but I wouldn't be surprised if either McCain or Babalama picked Bloomberg.  Instant campaign spending boost.

I was thinking the same thing.  Ex-democrat, independent with the ability to possibly draw some centrist Democrats away from Obama/Hillary.  But I don't think he will because it really wouldn't help him with Conservatives and that's what he needs.

I think it will be Romney, but if McCain is semi smart he would pick someone more to the right to attract the hard nosed conservatives.

Lieberman would clinch the Presidency beause he is liked by both party supporters. He is not far enough to the right for me. I think McCain will win anyway so why not pick a real conservative

The thing is, McCain knows he's a liberal...and he knows he's against socialists and communists.  SO he'll choose someone that will unify the party by choosing someone more conservative as him and not more liberal.

The other scenario is a black person if he feels the pressure of race on his back. Colin is too old and from the Bush administration and Congoleeza the same...so it could be another black person if feels obligated to do so.

Blacks are less than 18% of the population. Why has it become so important to have a black on every ticket? Rice and Powell are cut from the same cloth. They are both evil however Powell is the worst of the pair. McCain had better be careful about considering something like that because a great many of the Democrats that are not ready for a black muslim president will look towards McCain's ticket for a haven. If he joins the club and runs with a minority VP many people may just go with Obama.

that's why i'm counting on him to realize that and go for a more conservative GP and not worry so much about the shallowness of their voting...McCain will outsmart Obabbambmabmabm and hitlery.

He better pick someone known, if he picks someone unknown he will never win the election.
Any of these nobody will not get make him President.
It would have to be Romney or Huckabee or he might surprise everyone and pick Congo Rice.
If I was to take bets on this I would say Congo Rice is going to be his choice.

Picking Congo or Powell will cost him the election. We don't need and most Conservatives wont want a monkey see monkey do ticket. Cross over Democrats will be fleeing that sort of thing in their party. The Republicans need to offer something different.

McCain has stated that in general, the VP will be someone who agrees with his principles and priorities.

Despite the media's declaration that Rice is brilliant, I thought she had a low approval rating.  I don't think she'll be the nominee and I don't think she wants it either.

McCain is stubborn.  So I only think he'd choose Romney if his advisers were to persuade him to do so.  They would have to persuade him of how Romney is a good speaker and could talk a lot about the economy.  Romney showed in interview(s) this week that he'd be able to serve as a compliment to McCain's candidacy.

I don't expect Huckabee to be selected.  McCain considers Huckabee's views on marriage and abortion to be too radical.

McCain likes Lieberman a lot.  When McCain's campaign was in trouble during last summer, I had predicted that McCain might consider running as an independent with Lieberman.  However, since McCain is claiming to be a "conservative Republican" on the campaign trail, I think he'd realize that he can't make that claim by picking him.

If Lieberman does get seriously considered, then I don't know why Giuliani wouldn't get considered.  And between the two of them, I'm not sure why Lieberman would be more likely to get selected than Giuliani.  Thus, I don't expect Lieberman to get selected.

So of the people on this list, I think that the governors of Minnesota and South Carolina both have the best chances.  Also, the governor of Florida, Crist, also has a chance to get the VP nomination.

Has Rob Portman ever held a government position in addition to Budget Director?

Just putting a Black person on the ticket wouldn't do much to get votes from Blacks.  Many Blacks aren't fans of Condi Rice.

And I doubt Powell would accept the VP nomination.  When he was Secretary of State, I think he supported the idea of sending Paul Bremer to Iraq to replace a general, Jay Garner.  Based on Powell's military background, that made no sense.  And he would need to defend why he didn't argue against the "Rumsfeld strategy."  And then there's the speech he gave at the UN.    So it gives him less credibility.

I really doubt he will pick (Lie)berman, cause of the hard liner conservatives who are already a bit iffy about McPain being the nominee.  If McPain wants to win he should pick wisely on this.

You still don't understand.

A Black shouldn't be chosen only for the reason that people think having a Black person on the opposing ticket is necessary to be a competitive opponent.

For example, Alan Keyes doesn't seem to be that popular among Blacks.  And when he opposed Obama for a Senate seat, it wasn't a competitive.
