I wouldn't see this as necessarily an attack on only Christians, although it is attacking Christians, but it's an attack on anyone who holds traditional morals. Devout Christians are just one of many groups absolutely loathed by the left because they cling to moral values.

They see any exposure of his actions as a mean, personal attack on their annointed.
