Title: What Do You Think of Mormons?
Post by: Ari on April 25, 2008, 02:14:13 PM
The few I have met have always been very polite.  I once helped my mom do geneology research at one of their centers because they keep very detailed records.  I don't know much about their specific religious beliefs however, other than they believe that Joseph Smith was a Prophet who received revelations in the relatively recent 1840s.  Romney seemed like a pretty good guy.  Thoughts?

I had a crush on someone who's a Mormon.  Too bad she doesn't seem particularly impressed with me :(

I have the "Book Mormon" in my private    library.

I think, that Joseph Smith has written the books Nephi, Kakob, Enos, Jarom, Omni etc. by his hand without divine inspiration or prophecy.

I am very tolerant, when it comes to different Christian congregations, because I still learning.

But I have to reject the writings of Smith.

A Mormon is perhaps privatly a nice person, but his believes are nuts.

After all I know (I have not read everything in the books) it is a story of Jews, who travel to America in the time of King Zedekiah http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zedekiah of Juda.

America is called in this books "land of the promise".

I think this is a effort to create an autochthonal religion for citizens of the USA.

Basically it is the same the black Hebrews, the German Christs, Wright & Co. tried.

Not exactly - I meant, that people try to create god, like they want him to be.

Yes it is true.

In the preface to the book is written:

Close to the village Manchester in the county Ontario in the Stae of New York is a hill with a large scale, the highest in the area. On the west side of this hill, not far below the top, lay, under a rock from great size, the in a stone case stored plates.  ;D (page VII.)

THEY BELIEVE THE SHVARTZA WILL TURN WHITE IF HE REPENTS ;D

http://www.exmormon.org/tract2.htm

G-d was once a man like us.
G-d has a tangible body of flesh and bone.
G-d lives on a planet near the star Kolob.
G-d ("Heavenly Father") has at least one wife, our "Mother in Heaven," but she is so holy that we are not to discuss her nor pray to her.
Jesus was married.
We can become like G-d and rule over our own universe.
There are many gods, ruling over their own worlds.
Jesus and Satan ("Lucifer") are brothers, and they are our brothers - we are all spirit children of Heavenly Father
Jesus Christ was conceived by G-d the Father by having sex with Mary, who was temporarily his wife.
We should not pray to Jesus, nor try to feel a personal relationship with him.
The "Lord" ("G-d") in The Tanach is the being named Jesus in the New Testament, but different from "G-d the Father" ("Elohim").
In the highest degree of the celestial kingdom some men will have more than one wife.
Before coming to this earth we lived as spirits in a "pre-existence", during which we were tested; our position in this life (whether born to Mormons or savages, or in America or Africa) is our reward or punishment for our obedience in that life.
Dark skin is a curse from G-d, the result of our sin, or the sin of our ancestors. If sufficiently righteous, a dark-skinned person will become light-skinned.
The Garden of Eden was in Missouri. All humanity before the Great Flood lived in the western hemisphere. The Ark transported Noah and the other survivors to the eastern hemisphere.
Not only will human beings be resurrected to eternal life, but also all animals - everything that has ever lived on earth - will be resurrected and dwell in heaven.
Christ will not return to earth in any year that has seen a rainbow.
Mormons should avoid traveling on water, since Satan rules the waters.
The sun receives its light from the star Kolob.

If a Gentile becomes Mormon, the Holy Ghost actually purges his Gentile blood and replaces it with Israelite blood.
A righteous Mormon will actually see the face of G-d in the Mormon temple.
You can identify a false angel by the color of his hair, or by offering to shake his hand.

Agree with that - they VERY MUCH regard Judaism as well, and are extremely knowlegeable in Torah and OT- they are VERY decent humans- DEF. NOT muslims, they ALWAYS have enough fod for their neighbors when a disaster happens, as well.

I think they also believe that the Garden of Eden is in Jefferson City, Missouri.
They do have some wierd stuff in their beliefs but as far as known they are decent and peaceful people.
As every religion there are some sects that go totally out of their minds.
Well, except for islam, they ALL go totally out of their minds.
I know not everyone here is a fan of South Park but they did have a rather funny episode about Joseph Smith and how Mormonism started.

I've read almost all of their various books of scripture, and I know what they believe.

I could care less about their theology and doctrines...all I know is that I have met a lot of them over the years, gone to school with them, etc., and I have yet to meet any Mormons who aren't upright, square, and clean living people.

Most of them "look" clean and fresh because they are forbidden the drinking of colas, coffee, tea; are forbidden to smoke or use illegal drugs.

I mean as people from what i have observed, they have a good attitude and seem to be decent human beings.

Mormonism as a theology?  Well, whatever my opinion might be, it would be biased because I only like my religion :).

Eh, to each their own as long as they hurt no one and live righteously.

I like their conservative values, although Polygamy practice wouldn't be really "conservative" in my books. Some of their beliefs are out their, like spirit children, other than they are fine with good conservative values. I don't know if this true or not, but I think one of the reasons they are so interested in genealogy, is that when you find another ancestor of yours he goes to the spirit world with the other spirit children, something along those lines from what I heard, not sure if it's correct though.
