I'm planning on quitting smoking tomorrow and I want to make a few other lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier and getting more exercise. I'm a little nervous about this. I'm not convinced that I will be able to do it, though I want to very much. Have any of you been through this experience, and have you got any advice or encouragement for me? I could use your help.

One day at a time. Just make a determined effort not to smoke for one day. Do it as if your life depends upon it - because it really does. Then when you get through a whole day without a cigarette, G-d willing, you can prepare yourself to do the same thing the next day. Each day that you go without a cigarette, you will get stronger and stronger. You can defeat this deadly addiction. Hashem has given you the power to choose life over death. It will be difficult. You will be tempted to go back to the deadly addiction. But if you are determined, you can prevail and you will feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when you learn to say no to nicotine poison.

Having made the decision to stop smoking...
You are half way there!
I think Chaim has given you powerful advice.
I will pray for you to have strength.
You can do it!
Smoking is a great contributor to heart and lung disease.
Keep that in mind.
Just let us know if you need some verbal support and extra prayers along the way! :)

Hanna is right, drink a lot of water. Important for other reasons as well. I recently resigned from my job and I am taking 6 months off to lose 60 pounds and get back in shape. I have been going to the gym 6 days per week and in just 3 weeks I feel a tremendous different.
I have only lost 4 pounds but I can tell my body is changing. My pants slide on very easy now and I have some breathing room. Keep at it, your attitude improves tremendously with good health. I have never smoked but I understand how terrible an addiction it is. I will pray for your strength ZVK. O0

Try not to meet for a few weeks your smoking friends. This is one of the most dangerous situations. If some of them holds a packet of cigarettes to you, you could snap instinctive after it, because you did so for years. :)
I wish you strenght and success :) :) :)

There's a saying. Out of sight, out of mind.
(goes with "in sight, in mind" so have bad in front of you on public transport so you don't forget it)
Don't have cigarettes in the house.
Don't hang around people with cigarettes.
Since you're eating healthily, no need to go to a newsagent.
you won't be buying chocolates or cigarettes or sugary drinks.
It's not as difficult to beat as an addiction to internet porn where you're one google away from it, a habit of going to bed late or something, where you can't just quit going to bed.
It's like with alcohol. If you have an addiction to it then get it out of your life completely.

Yeah, it's not going to be easy. Part of the problem is that my wife and son are both smokers, though they want to quit also. That is one of the main reasons I'm doing this, to encourage them and to show them that it can be done. That is why I refuse to fail. Thank you all for your support and advice.

It looks like all three of you will have to do this together. It's going to be very difficult for you to quit if your wife and son are continuing to smoke.
Also, I don't know about what, if any withdrawal symptoms you can expect. You might want to look into some over the counter or prescription options to help ease your discomfort.

I quite just like that! But to help my father quit, a smoker of 35 years, I bought him nicotine patches and they seem to help. He did not touch a cigarette for 7-8 years now. Try them, if you think you can't do it on your own. For me to quite, a story of Charles de Gaulle quit was inspirational:
"You announce to everyone within earshot that you are quitting smoking."
BTW, this is exactly what he did and he stopped cold turkey, after smoking 2-3 packs of Gallouise for G-d knows how long.
Good luck to you, tell everyone that you are quitting! O0
PS Oh yes, one thing really helps- start aerobic activities - running, walking, swimming, playing soccer, elyptical machines - you'll be amazed how long you can go without a craving after you done.

Every single family member of mine died due to smoking related diseases. There is no reason for you to continue to smoke. It is poison and lethal. The effects of smoking, knows no boundries.
