Title: I am still unwell
Post by: AsheDina on February 04, 2010, 06:34:33 PM
HI, I am still unwell. Tonight I have almost 100 fever.  When I have 2 days of peace, from this AWFUL flu/cold/virus, it just comes back and renders me useless. I have things to do that I am totally missing, people.  I have people that I have to call that I need to catch up with, and just feel horrible, Chaim has a big project for me to do, and I am just broken, because I am so weak and tired, and my voice is too weak to sing.  I have missed gigs of singing.  :'(  I have not even had a flu/cold/virus like this is YEARS. YEARS.

David Ben Moshe and I are going to pray tonight and ask HaShem if he can deliver us from this horrible thing that is keeping BOTH os us sick. I am already eating right, I am so tired.
Please pray for me very hard.  Please eat tonight as if you are eating for me.
PLEASE pray, I am just so sick feeling.  DR tomorrow.  Please pray that this evil virus thing will just go now, whatever it is.  :'(

From: Jennie

    Dear Rabbi,

What is the Torah’s position on healing? Since everything is from G-d, do sickness and ailments have to be suffered because that’s G-d’s will? Or can we try to cure the maladies sent by G-d? If so, doesn’t that undermine His intentions?

Dear Jennie,

According to Judaism, everything that happens, whether we perceive it as good or as bad, comes from G-d – including illness and ailments.

Of course, in the case of physical sickness, there are natural causes and venues through which the illness or malady is contracted or occurs. But the root of the illness and a person’s susceptibility to it are from G-d.

G-d often sends the sickness as a warning signal that something is not only physically out of balance, but spiritually out of sync as well. This is not a curse but rather a blessing in disguise because it enables us to do spiritual reckoning and find out where we need correcting.

Would a person moving his hand toward fire resent the pain from the heat causing him to recoil before roasting his fingers? Would he complain, “Why did G-d have to cause me this pain?” Of course not! He’d be thankful for the pain that saved him from serious harm. So too sickness is viewed as a warning sign that he may need to recoil from or adjust what he’s doing wrong before causing serious damage.

The converse is also true: Just as one wouldn’t reconcile himself to the pain from the flame based on the reasoning that it’s from G-d but would rather recoil, so too in healing. Our recognition that illness comes from G-d does not mean we are to reconcile ourselves to the pain but rather we must remove the malady – spiritually by recoiling from transgression and physically by seeking a cure.

This is the meaning of the teaching of the Sages that G-d gives permission and allows the doctor to heal. G-d brings sickness not because He wants there to be sickness, but because He wants there to be healing, both physical and spiritual. A person’s attempt to cure his body must be accompanied by an attempt to mend his ways.

The Torah describes how the People, audaciously complaining about their condition in the desert despite G-d’s miraculous provision for them, were smitten by a plague of poisonous snakes in which many died. The people realized they were being punished for their venomous speech against G-d and Moses and repented. G-d told Moses to fashion a snake and place it on a pole for the people to see (probably the original source for the well-known symbol of Medicine, see our article The Healing Serpent). So, “Moses made a copper snake and put it on a pole, and whenever a snake bit a man, he would gaze upon the copper snake and live” (Numbers 21:5-9).

Commenting on this event, our Sages challenged, “And does the copper snake cause life or death? Rather, those who saw the snake and humbled themselves before G-d in repentance were cured, those who didn’t were not” (Rosh Hashanah 29a).

From these sources we see that illness comes from G-d not because He wants illness but rather because He wants us to correct our ways. If we focus on the spiritual malady underlying the sickness, G-d finds favor in the doctor’s attempt to heal. After all, the illness was only brought in order to alarm us to the need for spiritual realigning. With this approach, healing does not undermine G-d’s intention; it brings us in line with His will.

I'm glad I don't follow that form of religion. I don't believe God gave my aunt cancer and murdered her when she had two teenagers to care for. A loving God wouldn't do that.

I think God might allow people to get sick because of actions they took of their own free will (like an unhealthy lifestyle), or for some other reason, but I don't think God is the one who actually puts the sickness onto people.

I wonder what form of transgression is punished by catching a cold?

This is so beautiful Muman. Incredibly gorgeous and deep meaning.  I stared at it for a half an hour. ; )
 Thank you all so much.
How could our once great country forget where the medical symbol comes from and try to make Obama be some 'ultimate healer' for our health?
Thank you all, I am not AS tired today.
Bless you all.

Paulette, perhaps you should be checked for mononucleosis, Epstein-Barr, or cytomegalovirus. These three viruses cause chronic illness that can mimic the flu.

I am going back to the DR on Monday, I feel not so tired today, anyway, I know that you love G-d Brennan, so, I guess I will just keep the faith until Monday and keep drinking my OJ. : )

The beauty of the Copper snake is not that it has any magic power of its own to heal people. Its meaning is that we are to look up at it and remember Hashem. I have been noticing this concerning other aspects, including the beauty of mountains. I related this idea on the day of my fathers funeral that we look to mountains to remind us to look upward toward heaven and beseech Hashem for all our needs. This idea also comes through in the episode I alluded to a week ago, when Moses, Aaron and Hur stood on the hill and Moses held his staff over his head, and the Israelites became victorious, when his arms tired and they fell the Israelites fell back... The secret is that when Moses arms reached skyward the Israelites were reminded to look upward toward Hashem...

Actually some people say that it is...

Moses is noted for one particularly spectacular foray into practical healing: When poisonous snakes attacked the Jews in the desert, God instructed Moses to fashion a special healing instrument: a pole topped with the form of a copper snake. When the pole was held aloft, those who had been afflicted by a snakebite would gaze on the serpentine image and be cured. (Numbers 21:6-10) This was the forerunner of the caduceus, the snake-entwined rod which is today the emblem of the medical profession.

This is the very point. The cure DOES NOT come from the snake. The cure comes from our Father in Heaven.

Rav Shlomo Freifeld, z"l, once commented: It is significant that the universal symbol of the medical profession today is the caduceus ? the winged staff with two inter-twined snakes. It comes from this week's parsha: "They shall gaze at the copper snake and live."

Why did the medical profession pick this very symbol? Perhaps because at one time, the medical profession realized that the proper way to view doctors are as agents of the Almighty. One cannot get well without a good doctor and one needs a good doctor ? one who has the merit to administer the proper care and treatment. But the doctor is merely an agent.

Just as everyone realizes that it is not the scalpel that removes the malignancy, but rather it is the surgeon who handles the scalpel, so too we must realize it is not the doctor who brings life, but it is the Master of the World who is using the doctor as his holy agent.

That is why this is THE appropriate symbol of the medical profession. We need this awareness today even more than they needed it then. Today, medicine is so advanced and doctors can do so much that we must always bear in mind that we are looking at the copper serpent. Healing will only occur if we subjugate ourselves to our Father in Heaven.

That is why, of all things, the Almighty took the source of the problem and made it into the source of the cure. This teaches us for then and for all generations "I put to death and I bring life. I struck down and I will heal..." [Devorim 32:39]. It is the Almighty who gives the 'klap' and hopefully it is the Almighty who will send the cure, speedily.

I agree, but this nation has gotten SO FAR away from its Judao roots, that it does not even know WHAT the symbol means.  Like it is a hidden thing. Sad.  While this nation may be set on Christian values, I 100% believe that had it not blessed the Jewish people, it would have been nothing.  I am NOT saying this out of some 'superiority'  it is what it is.

Sorry to hear you are still not feeling well and now that David is also under the weather. I was just remarking to someone the other day how the cold season has been a good one with not many people walking around sick. I guess I spoke too soon. Be sure you both get plenty of rest thats the best thing.
