A Latin American expert is delighted that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez did not secure enough votes in the country's recent election to get a tighter grip on power.

 

Although Chavez's coalition did maintain control of the legislature, the results show that millions of Venezuelans favor the opposition, which wants to halt Chavez's drive to consolidate power. One rival leader notes, "Here it is very clear: Venezuela said 'no' to Cuban-style communism; Venezuela said 'yes' to the path of democracy."

Humberto FontovaMeanwhile, analysts believe the opposition benefitted from growing concerns about rampant crime, high inflation, and the continuing economic recession in the country.

"Usually I'm not an optimist. I think he probably peaked a couple of months ago, and this may be the beginning of his slide downhill," suggests Humberto Fontova, who fled Cuba in 1961 and has written two books on that regime. "The Venezuelan people have come to their senses. An exact North Korean or Cuban-Stalinist state didn't really exist in Venezuela. They were looking for it; Chavez wants one."

In response to the recent election, Fontova adds that he has not been this optimistic about the South American country in a long time.

Does this mean Chavez is finished? Hopefully one day, Venezuela will become a democracy.

I'm afraid you're misinformed and a bit confused.

It is precisely because Venezuela was a democracy which allowed Chavez to be democratically elected.

This has to be giving Chavez plenty to think about... A friend told me a while back that the Ecuadorian Indians were getting fed up with the government and when they want a change they get a change... I thought he was being funny however I see they tossed the president out on his ear today... We need some Ecuadorian Indians here in the good old USA to clean out Washington.

BBC News article says that Hugo Chavez's party won 95 seats and the opposition party won 65 seats... and maybe there are some smaller parties who got seats too. And so the opposition seems to be celebrating that Hugo Chavez no longer has 2/3rds of the parliament(approximately 67%). But Chavez still has about 60% of the parliament.

Presenting this as some sort of victory by the opposition party seems kinda ridiculous. They did make some gains but Chavez's party still has a clear majority in their parliament.

I personally consider the Indian people to be exceptionally gifted and extraordinarily intelligent.

I often wonder - If the British had never colonized and exploited the Indian sub-continent which was at that time considered the richest country on Earth, what would be the status and condition of India today?

Do you know of any links to which you may direct me for further study on this idea?
