Dear Chaim,
My name is David Djordjevic. I work for a Serbian patriotic monthly newspaper called "Geopolitika" www.geopolitika.rs. My father and I have been following your work for a very long time (six years!) and feel very strongly about your support for Serbia. Not only have our two nations suffered depradations from the West, we have much in common spiritually.
In some small way the Serbian national idea contributed to Zionism. The Serbs were the first Balkan nation which achieved its independence from the Ottoman Empire (in 1804) and succeeded in establishing a state without much foreign help (much like Israel). A rabbi from the then Hungarian town of Semlin (Zemun), by the name of Alkalay, was inspired by their fight, and proposed that the Jews do the same. (There is a street with his name in Zemun.) Before he became the founder of Zionism, Theodore Herzl was a firm supporter of Jewish assimilation into West European society; however, his grandfather had told him of Rabbi Alkalay's idea, which he accepted when he saw that Western Europeans had no liking for Jews in any form.
