This article explains how Libyan arabs have murderous racism towards African black laborers due to them having the nerve to accept work from Gaddafi. This college kid doesn't seem like he is motivated by any sort of ideology, he just seems like a young person who is being overly reckless and has a sense of adventure that is a bit beyond what a reasonable sense of adventure is.

He's also an adult and capable of making moral decisions. Getting involved in a revolution, whether it's a good cause or not, is a serious act with real-life consequences. He's old enough to know this.
