CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez headed back to Cuba on Saturday night for a fourth phase of chemotherapy that he expects to be his last round of treatment for cancer.
Supporters saw off Chavez with songs and a prayer outside the presidential palace before he left for the airport along with Bolivian President Evo Morales, who was accompanying him to the island.
Chavez told the crowd that he is confident he is overcoming the illness.
"I'm sure that this week we will close the cycle of chemotherapy and we will be turning the page," he told supporters, standing at the doors of the presidential palace.
"Chavez's cancer is now part of this history," he added, likening it to the short-lived coup he survived in 2002.
Chavez waved to the crowd wearing the red beret and fatigues from his years as an army paratroop commander.
He said he expected to undergo medical tests in Havana on Saturday night and then resume chemotherapy Sunday.
Chavez said he and Morales both planned to meet with Cuban President Raul Castro.
Later, a military band played Venezuela's national anthem at the airport as Chavez and Morales prepared to board their flight to Havana. Chavez said he would return to Venezuela before next weekend.
Chavez underwent surgery in Cuba in June to remove a tumor from his pelvic region. Since then, he has undergone three rounds of chemotherapy treatments, two of those in Cuba.
He has lost weight, and since the beginning of August he has appeared with his head shaved after his hair began to fall out due to chemotherapy.
The 57-year-old leader has said that the treatment aims to prevent any cancerous cells from reappearing and that tests have shown no signs of a recurrence.
He said previously that he expects his entire treatment regime to be finished around the end of October.
Once the treatments are finished, Chavez said, it will be "goodbye to the threat of cancer, and then on to life."
"I will come out strengthened," he said.
Chavez, who has been in office since 1999, is up for re-election in October 2012. Referring to his political campaign, he said he will be ready for "the battle ahead, which is hard."

It says his cancer is in remission. It is not news that he has cancer. Where does it say he is about to die?
It is possible to live with cancer f0r many years... my stepdad has ben dealing with cancer for almost 8 years now.

He says he's being treated but knowing communists, they never tell the complete truth to avoid mass panic. Kim Jung II's father thought he was invincible as well.

It's funny he has to go to Cuba likely because he is afraid some doctor in Venezuela will have an "accident" leads to his death on the operating table. Hopefully Chavez passes quickly and Venezuela can start getting away from communism.

Let us all pray that this piece of excrement kicks it soon. I dont often daven for people to die but Chavez has proven to be an enemy of the Jewish people {through his support of Irans genocidal maniacs}.
May Chavez kick the bucket soon!

Shamans from tribes in Venezuela's Amazon jungle held a ceremony at the Miraflores presidential palace Saturday to help Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez recover from his cancer treatment. Chavez, who insists that he was "not sick but recovering" from cancer, greeted the shamans wearing a track suit in the colors of the Venezuelan national flag and wore a crown of feathers the visitors gave him.
Members of the Yekuana, Jivi and Wayuu communities danced, sang and prayed as they invoked their ancestors to protect the Venezuelan leader.
The ritual was aimed at protecting Chavez "against enemies and bad health," said Miguel Morales, a shaman from the Jivi community.
It also serves "so that he is left in peace, politically," he said.
"We came from far away, from the (southern) state of Amazonas, to bless him," Morales said.
Chavez thanked the shamans for the crown of feathers. "I consider it sacred and will keep it for my whole life," Chavez told them.
"The cancer was removed, and with the power of god and all the gods it has gone and will never return," said Chavez, 57.
Chavez underwent surgery in Cuba in June to remove a tumor in his pelvic area. He has offered little information on his cancer, for which he underwent chemotherapy in Cuba in July and August. A third round of chemo was done in Caracas last week.
Since the operation Chavez has limited his public appearances, lost weight and lost most of his hair from his cancer treatment.

Yes, but I think his days are very numbered....I have someone I know that calls South America a few times a week... He claims that the buzz down there is that they are keeping Chavez alive for now but that the cancer he has will soon finish him off... The problem is that what replaces him for the foreseeable future most likely will be of the same political bend... Venezuela has had this sort of problem for years now it's not going to end with this animals passing.
