This week we read Parasha Re'eh...

Hashem places before us, a blessing and a curse... A Jew must consciously choose the life of Blessing by following the commandments which Hashem gave us at Mount Sinai. The Torah relates to us the blessing which we said before crossing the Jordan to enter the land.

The centrality of the Temple is explained in our Torah portion. Hashem will only accept our offerings/korbanot at the altar of the Holy Temple. Making sacrifices anywhere else is completely forbidden. We are permitted to eat the meat of animals, but we cannot use them as offerings.

What is done to a false prophet, and the city which entices Jews to idolatry, is explained in this weeks portion. The false prophet is put to death, and the city is utterly destroyed and nothing is taken as loot...

The Torah continues to explain about the Tithe, the giving of 1/10th of a persons income to the Temple. The commandment of giving charity to the poor and the Sabbatical year (every seven years) when all loans are forgiven is discussed. Also we are reminded that our Eved Ivri {Jewish servant} must be let free after six years of service.

Finally the Torah reminds us of the Regalim, the three yearly pilgrimages to Jerusalem...
