Zahal has a core of 35,000 professional career officers and sergeants. The remaining 170,000 on active duty, and 500,000 reserves being conscripts.
Even more than defending the State, in Israeli Leftist social engineers minds' Zahal used to serve the even more important function of being a "melting pot" where all 18 year old "Dudus" were thoroughly "Israelified", for better or worse.
Feiglin claims that dragging tens of thousand of unwilling Frumaks in to Zahal is totally unworkable, and he suggests an all-volunteer paid professional army like in most of the world.
From a practical and a Kahanist view, would a professional volunteer army be cheaper and better?

Professional Volunteer Army Founding Knesset Caucus
Established by Deputy Knesset Speaker, MK Moshe Feiglin
The equal burden issue has awakened a public storm. It threatens to sunder Israeli society. Countless committees have been established and creative solutions have been proposed. But one solution is completely absent from the conversation: The professional army model.
Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, MK Moshe Feiglin, together with social organizations from the full political array have founded the Professional Volunteer Army Lobby.
The caucus will take place on Wednesday, 4 Tamuz/June 12 in the Jerusalem Hall in the Knesset.

18 yr-old Dudus... LOL
Maybe Feiglin is right.

The national service army brings all kind of people together, who would never meet under normal conditions. It is an integrative element, that creates cohesion and identification.
the volunteer armee has not this adventages.

Feiglin's idea of an all-volunteer army may be gaining traction http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/168931#.Ubs9fMtBTn4
The Haredi rabbis will tell you that defending the secular-led State of Israel that they so despise does not come under the category of a "Milchemet Mitzvah" ie an "Obligatory War where all go out to battle, even a bridegroom from his nuptial chamber" (Rambam).
R.Kahane said that it certainly is a Milchemet Mitzvah.

But he also held that "The Haredim are IRRELEVANT", ie trying to conscript surly Frumaks is as much a waste of time as is trying to force hateful Israeli Arabs in to the Golani Brigade!

Another fraudulent use of a possibly fraudulent quote.

They should make a strictly Haredi section, and let it compete with the ordinary IDF brigades.
Maybe the competition will sharpen both sides to be professional soldiers.

It certainly would be less of an issue if the Jewish State acted a little Jewish from time to time instead of being just another Goyim... I know I would not want to serve in an organization which is used as a hammer over the heads of the National-Religious.

BOTH sides are to blame. The secularists who want to indoctrinate the youth into their ideology and their rulership and the Haredi "leadership" as well for being stupid and not fighting for more Nachal Haredi type units and such which by the way are a leading role model type of unit not just for themselves but for the rest of the country. Also Religious Jews need to speak out more about why many of the Dati-Leumi type of units (Hesder where it was learning + fighting) were closed down instead of promoted and expanded as need be.
