According to the news story it was not an assassination attempt, rather a case of road rage with a person he has had issues with for about a year.

I heard, supposedly, that Zimmerman was waving a gun at him, so he shot at him. They have had other run ins in the past. I guess, the guy went and reported it right away. I think Zimmerman has some issues upstairs...
