Homo is actually a better term for homosexuals. It just means same. You can argue it's better to call them homosexuals rather than homos because it's hijacking the word homo to refer only to homosexuals. Homogenous and other words start with homo and don't mean homosexual. On the other hand, calling them homo is probably considered a slur so it's good to insult them. In Hebrew, homoim velesbiot is what people call "gays and lesbians". Homosexual at least describes what they are. It's better than hijacking the word gay which just means happy or lesbian which refers to an island.

Homo in the term Homo Sapien refers to the name of the human species and means man in Latin and is unrelated to the Greek word.
