The Czech Republic describes the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strips, which has resulted in the death of over 460 Palestinians as 'defensive'. "At the moment from our perspective we do understand that the action is part of the defensive action of Israel," Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek was quoted by a government spokesman as saying on Saturday, AFP reported.
Topolanek, whose country took over the EU presidency on January 1, made the remarks as Israeli troops and tanks entered the costal sliver on the eighth day of an all-out military assault on the territory.
"We do understand that it [the Israeli onslaught] is more defensive than offensive. This is the position of the Czech prime minister for the European presidency," Topolanek said according to spokesman Jiri Frantisek Potuznik.
Embarking on the attacks under the pretext of 'self defense' against the retaliatory launching of home-made rockets by Gazans, Tel Aviv later admitted that the main objective of the military operation is to topple the democratically elected Hamas government which took over the Gaza Strip in mid-June 2007.
Thus far, over 460 Palestinian have been killed and more than 2,300 other have been wounded in the attacks, which began last Saturday through aerial bombardment and expanded into a ground incursion on Sturday.
Amid what is described as the 'genocide of Gazans' Israeli forces barred medics with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from entering the Gaza Strip for a second-consecutive day.
Over the few days that the Czech Republic has taken over the EU presidency, its leaders have made a number of controversial remarks including one by President Vaclav Klaus, who described the climate change as a 'dangerous myth'.
