(IsraelNN.com) Congressmen have introduced a joint resolution aimed at blocking American President George W. Bush's proposal to sell advanced weapons to Saudi Arabia. Democrats Anthony Weiner (New York) and Robert Wexler (Florida) introduced the Joint Resolution of Disapproval after President Bush formally notified Congress of his intent to sell $124 million worth of weapons to the oil-rich kingdom, which they termed "a known sponsor and financier of terrorism."
The arms sale is part of a previously announced $20 billion arms package to Saudi Arabia, although administration officials have indicated they might break up the proposal into smaller parcels in order to win more support from Congress. More than 100 Congressmen already have written President Bush that they intend to vote against the proposal.
"Saudi Arabia has not been a true ally in the war on terror or furthering the United States interests in the Middle East," Congressman Wexler charged. "In July of this year, American officials in Iraq said the majority of suicide bombers in Iraq are from Saudi Arabia and that about 45 percent of all foreign fighters are Saudi... Saudi Arabia appears to continue to bankroll terrorist organizations that have attacked both the United States and Israel."
