Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said that he will bring the DREAM Act to the Senate floor so it will be ready for a vote as a stand alone bill or as an amendment to another bill. Majority Leader Harry Reid was prepared to add the Amnesty for illegal aliens who serve in the military or attend college to the Defense Authorization bill, but a filibuster stalled the bill on Tuesday.
“We’re not giving up,” Durbin said at a Campus Progress event. “This is not the end of the fight, it’s just the beginning.”
Sen. Durbin gave a passionate floor speech about the DREAM Act after Tuesday's filibuster. He first offered the bill in 2001, but it's only come up for a vote once when it was defeated in 2007.
Durbin said he hopes some Senators who are cautious to support the bill will vote for it during a lame-duck session after the November elections especially if they lose their re-election bids.
“Some members of the Senate who are not going to return may vote in our favor. I hope that’s the case.”
The DREAM Act would provide an Amnesty for anyone under the age of 35 who attended a U.S. high school, earned a high school diploma or GED, and agrees to serve in the military or attend college for at least two years. Meant to help illegal alien children who were brought to the United States unknowingly by their parents, once the they receive their Amnesty, they can immediately turn around and sponsor their parents for legal status under the current Chain Migration law. Furthermore, the Amnesty provides no enforcement provisions and no end date or cap thereby encouraging future illegal immigration.
