Hiring illegals not an uncommon unpractice

A senior demographer for the Pew Hispanic Center says despite the controversy surrounding the maid situation of a former eBay executive, illegal workers are not uncommon in California.

California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman (R) recently made headlines over a debate revealing she had hired an illegal alien as her maid in the past. But Jeffrey Passel points out that unknowingly hiring illegal immigrants is not unusual, especially in The Golden State.

"You've got about two-and-a-half million undocumented immigrants living in California, and it's had the largest number [of illegal immigrants] for at least 30 years," he reports. "California has not only the largest number, but just under seven percent of the population is undocumented immigrants -- and that's the highest share in the country."

The demographer explains there is no real way to prove that an employee is in the country illegally because "there's no system in the United States to check the validity of Social Security documents and the things that people have to present to get a job. It's possible to check whether the Social Security number is valid or not, but there's no real way to check to see that the person who's presenting the number is the one whose number it is."

Passel adds that even though a number of illegal immigrants do work for regular employers, many tend to choose jobs that do not require licensing or certification.
