Bauer: Don't expect Obama to move to center

A conservative activist and former presidential candidate doesn't believe President Barack Obama is going to moderate his left-wing ideology heading toward the 2012 election cycle.

As President Obama prepares to deliver his State of the Union address next week, polls show the president's popularity has spiked following several domestic policy victories and his moving speech during the recent memorial for victims of the January 8 shooting in Tucson.

While higher approval numbers bode well for the president as he begins to focus on 2012, Gary Bauer of American Values predicts it is going to be a short-term advantage for Obama.

Gary Bauer 2 (American Values)"At the end of the day, when people go to vote two years from now, what they're going to be focusing on is whether the economy is growing, whether they think America is safer than it was before Barack Obama took office, [and] whether they believe that our debt situation is getting under control," says the conservative icon.

Bauer does not believe Obama is going to imitate Bill Clinton as he moves into re-election campaign mode. "The proof of whether he's changing or not will be in whether he calls off the regulatory dogs that are costing America jobs and are regulating many businesses literally out of business," he states. "And I've seen no sign of a letup in that area."

The American Values leader says that is particularly true in the energy sector, where the president continues to impose restrictions on every form of energy the United States is well supplied with, thus increasing the nation's dependence on foreign sources.
