MTV's child exploitation illegal

Questions are now being raised about whether Skins, MTV's controversial new show, violates U.S. child pornography and obscenity laws.

 

Critics claim the program glamorizes promiscuous sex and drug and alcohol use among teens, and the Parents Television Council (PTC) has called for an investigation into the show. (See earlier story) But Dan Isett, public policy director for the organization, calls the show "raunchy" and tells OneNewsNow that just possessing this type of material is illegal.

"What we have in this case is not somebody sitting in a basement, downloading material like you might associate; what we have here is a major media company actively exploiting and trying to profit off of the exploitation of children," Isett laments.

Dan IsettHe emphasizes that this type of material does not have to be aired or distributed before it is in violation of the law.

"The reason for that is simple; it's to discourage people from exploiting our children," the PTC public policy director explains. "The stakes here couldn't be higher because there are simply lines that cannot and must not be crossed, and we're deeply concerned that Viacom and MTV in this case have, in fact, crossed that line."


So Isett's organization has encouraged the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, along with the Justice Department, to launch an investigation into the program.
