Terror plot arrest: Two men, one born in New York, charged in planned synagogue attacks, say sources

Two men arrested on terrorism charges were plotting to attack Manhattan synagogues with grenades and assault rifles, sources said Thursday.

The alleged mastermind is a Moroccan Muslim born in Queens who has prior arrests for drugs.

He had enlisted a pal and planned to sell drugs in order to finance the purchase of weapons, law enforcement sources told the Daily News.

No specific synagogue had been targeted, and the plot was still in its early planning stages when detected by investigators with the help of an informant, the sources said.

Both men were caught on wiretaps discussing the plot, according to sources, who said the chilling plan had been hatched several months ago and appears to have pre-dated the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Neither man has any known ties to terror organizations and no other arrests are imminent, the sources said.

The Manhattan district attorney's office is expected to hold a press conference later Thursday to detail the arrests.

In an unusual move, investigators with the Joint Terrorism Task Force had declined to prosecute the case, saying the plan was more aspirational than operational, sources said.

The district attorney's office then picked up the case and is expected to charge the men under a state anti-terrorism law.

The charges come more than a year after an Al Qaeda-trained terrorist failed in his attempt to bomb Times Square on May 1, 2010.

Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized Pakistani living in Connecticut, pleaded guilty to plotting to kill hundreds of New Yorkers with a bomb-laden SUV in the Crossroads of the World.

Law enforcement authorities have been on alert in the wake of the killing of Bin Laden for any retaliatory attack from the terror network.

The Yemeni wing of Al Qaeda has promised to avenge the death of the terror leader.

MYFOXNY.COM - The NYPD busted two Queens men who were planning a terror attack targeted at Jews in New York City. The man were planning a jihad, according to officials.

"They wanted to destroy a major synagogue in Manhattan," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at an afternoon news conference.

Detectives with the Intelligence Division, which investigates terrorism, arrested the two men, Ahmed Ferhani, 26, and Mohamed Mandouh, 20, in Manhattan at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. The men claimed to be upset over the treatment of Muslims around the world.

"'They are treating us like dogs,'" Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly quoted one of the suspects as saying during the undercover sting.

Ferhani is an immigrant from Algeria.

An undercover detective reported that he proposed and developed a plan to bomb synagogues and kill Jews and also wanted to provide support for Gaza.

Ferhani also expressed his intent to participate in a "Jihad," according to the criminal complaint.

Mandouh, a native of Morocco, allegedly got involved in the plans and even noted the importance of paying for things in cash rather than credit cards.

Ferhani allegedly planned to disguise himself as a Jewish worshipper, attend services at a synagogue and, while pretending to pray, leave a bomb in the synagogue.

All Jews must be on the lookout now for people attending synagogue who are strangers. All Shuls should hire security guards this year as I expect the terrorists would love to strike us during the High Holidays. Make sure that armed security guards are posted at the doors and lookouts are vigilant for strange behavior and activity.

Also notice if anyone in the congregation who is not a regular is acting nervous, not praying as a Jew would pray, speaking in arabic, wearing clothes which seem islamic, etc.... I have a very strong feeling that there are many such jihadi cells which are plotting to attack Jews while they are praying. It seems that this is the new target, as we saw last Pesach when Ben Yosef was shot at Yosefs tomb...

Totally sick - how can any Jew not recognize his enemy when it keeps raising its ugly head like this all the time?

The reporter mentioned as the first comment in the story, that one of the terrorists said he was "tired of the world treating muslims like dogs."   

They presented it pretty clearly as antisemitic Islamic jihad.   No one could see the story and not take that message away.

One guy intended to grow payos and a beard to fit in at the synagogue that he would ultimately target and try to blow up.
