The Bad and Ugly concerning WikiLeaks
« on: August 30, 2011, 01:52:34 AM »
As I suspected from the beginning there would be bad news concerning Israel in the wikileaks documents. Most people here at JTF are not concerned with the wikileaks documents as long as it makes the diplomats look foolish. But as this story indicates the newer leaks concerning Israel just may compromise Mossad agents identities.

I hope that this is not as serious as it seems...

Reports: Information About Mossad Agents Leaked

German publications, including Der Spiegel, have reported that a Wikileaks file which contains details about Mossad agents who are in countries that are hostile to the United States was accidentally leaked to the internet.

According to the reports, the documents leaked without protecting the sources who leaked them, a fact which could endanger both the lives of the sources as well as the lives of the Mossad agents whose names were published.

im fine with leaks on embarrassing information, but they can't just release security-sensitive information.

if some mossad missions do get compromised than the mossad should do (you get creative here)

You mean we're supposed to be concerned with the same Mossad whose chief purpose is to spy on right-wing Jewish dissidents?

You appear to confuse Mossad {which is responsible for international matters} for Shin Bet/Shabak which is responsible for internal matters...

Remember that Mossad also has been relentlessly cutting down the enemies around the world. Remember the terrorist who died in Dubai recently? How about the Iranian nuke scientist? I think that Mossad is doing a great job... I also think you are confusing Shabak/Shin Bet for Mossad. I believe there is a difference as in the difference between the FBI and CIA... The FBI is analogous to Shabak {internal security issues} while Mossad is more involved in international issues...

These agents who have been compromised are the ones who are protecting the state of Israel from international enemies. I doubt they are involved in spying on right-wing nationals....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mossad

Quote
The Mossad (Hebrew: המוסד‎, Arabic: الموساد‎), short for HaMossad leModi'in uleTafkidim Meyuchadim (Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations) (Hebrew: המוסד למודיעין ולתפקידים מיוחדים‎ Arabic: الموساد للاستخبارات والمهام الخاصة‎ al-Mōsād lil-Istiḫbārāt wal-Mahāmm al-Ḫāṣṣah), is the national intelligence agency of Israel.

The Mossad is responsible for intelligence collection and covert operations which are suspected to include targeted killings and paramilitary activities beyond Israel's borders, bringing Jews to Israel from countries where official Aliyah agencies are forbidden, and protecting Jewish communities worldwide. It is one of the main entities in the Israeli Intelligence Community, along with Aman (military intelligence) and Shin Bet (internal security), but its director reports directly to the Prime Minister.

If the identity of the Mossad agents are compromised it means very bad news for Israels security... Anyone who supports leaking this information is a traitor to Israel. Just look at the list of operations Mossad has carried out against our enemies...

Iraq

Assistance in the defection and rescuing of the family of Munir Redfa, an Iraqi pilot who defected and flew his MiG-21 to Israel in 1966: "Operation Diamond". Redfa's entire family was also successfully smuggled from Iraq to Israel. Previously unknown information about the MiG-21 was subsequently shared with the United States.

Operation Sphinx[2] – Between 1978 and 1981, obtained highly sensitive information about Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor by recruiting an Iraqi nuclear scientist in France.

Operation Bramble Bush II – In the 1990s, the Mossad began scouting locations in Iraq where Saddam Hussein could be ambushed by Sayeret Matkal commandos inserted into Iraq from Jordan. The mission was called off due to Operation Desert Fox and the ongoing Israeli-Arab peace process.
[edit] Jordan

In what is thought to have been a reprisal action for a Hamas suicide-bombing in Jerusalem on July 30, 1997 that killed 16 Israelis, Benjamin Netanyahu authorised an operation against Khaled Mashal, the Hamas representative in Jordan.[43] On September 25, 1997, Mashal was injected in the ear with a toxin (thought to have been a derivative of the synthetic opiate Fentanyl called Levofentanyl).[44][45] Jordanian authorities apprehended two Mossad agents posing as Canadian tourists and trapped a further six in the Israeli embassy. In exchange for their release, an Israeli physician had to fly to Amman and deliver an antidote for Mashal. The fallout from the failed killing eventually led to the release of Sheik Ahmed Yassin, the founder and spiritual leader of the Hamas movement, and scores of Hamas prisoners. Netanyahu flew into Amman on September 29 to apologize personally to King Hussein, but was met instead by the King's brother, Crown Prince Hassan.[44]
[edit] Lebanon

The provision of intelligence and operational assistance in the 1973 Operation Spring of Youth special forces raid on Beirut. The sending of letter bombs to PFLP member Bassam Abu Sharif. Sharif was severely wounded, but survived.[46]

The targeted killing of Ali Hassan Salameh, the leader of Black September, on January 22, 1979 in Beirut by a car bomb.[47][48]

The killing of Ghassan Kanafani, also by a car bomb, in 1972.[49]

Providing intelligence for the killing of Abas al-Musawi, secretary general of Hezbollah, in Beirut in 1992.[15]

The alleged killing of Jihad Ahmed Jibril, the leader of the military wing of the PFLP-GC, in Beirut in 2002.[50]

The alleged killing of Ghaleb Awwali, a senior Hezbollah official, in Beirut in 2004.[51]

The alleged killing of Mahmoud al-Majzoub, a leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in Sidon in 2006.[52]

The Mossad was allegedly suspected of establishing a large spy network in Lebanon, recruited from Druze, Christian, and Sunni Muslim communities, and officials in the Lebanese government, to spy on Hezbollah and its Iranian Revolutionary Guard advisors. Some have allegedly been active since the 1982 Lebanon War. In 2009, Lebanese Security Services supported by Hezbollah's intelligence unit, and working in collaboration with Syria, Iran, and possibly Russia, launched a major crackdown which resulted in the arrests of around 100 alleged spies "working for Israel".[53] Previously, in 2006, the Lebanese army uncovered a network that allegedly assassinated several Lebanese and Palestinian leaders on behalf of Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.[54]
[edit] Pakistan

In a September 2003 news article, it was alleged by Rediff News that General Pervez Musharaf, the then-President of Pakistan, decided to establish a clandestine relationship between Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Mossad via officers of the two services posted at their embassies in Washington, DC.
[edit] Syria

Eli Cohen, a spy for the Mossad, infiltrated the highest echelons of the Syrian government, was a close friend of the Syrian President, and was considered for the post of Minister of Defense. He gave his Mossad handlers a complete plan of the Syrian defenses on the Golan Heights, the Syrian Armed Forces order of battle, and a complete list of the Syrian military's weapons inventory. He also ordered the planting of trees by every Syrian fortified position under the pretext of shading soldiers, but the trees actually served as targeting markers for the Israel Defense Forces. He was discovered by Syrian and Soviet intelligence, tried in secret, and executed in 1965.[55] His information played a crucial role during the Six Day War.

The alleged killing of Izz El-Deen Sheikh Khalil, a senior member of the military wing of Hamas, in an automobile booby trap in September 2004 in Damascus.[56]

The alleged killing of Muhammad Suleiman, the alleged head of Syria's nuclear program, in 2008. Suleiman was killed by a sniper firing from a boat while on a beach in Tartus.[57]

The alleged killing of Imad Mughniyah, a senior leader of Hezbollah complicit in the 1983 United States embassy bombing, with an exploding headrest in Damascus in 2008.[58]
[edit] United Arab Emirates
Main article: Assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh

The Mossad is suspected of killing Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior Hamas military commander, in January 2010 at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The team which carried out the killing is estimated, on the basis of CCTV and other evidence, to have consisted of at least 26 agents traveling on bogus passports. The operatives entered al-Mabhouh's hotel room, where Mabhouh was subjected to electric shocks and interrogated. The door to his room was reported to have been locked from the inside.[59][60][61][62][63] Although the UAE police and Hamas have declared Israel responsible for the killing, no direct evidence linking Mossad to the crime has been found. The agents' bogus passports included six British passports, cloned from those of real British nationals resident in Israel and suspected by Dubai, five Irish passports, apparently forged from those of living individuals,[64] forged Australian passports that raised fears of reprisal against innocent victims of identity theft,[65] a genuine German passport and a false French passport. Emirati police say they have fingerprint and DNA evidence of some of the attackers, as well as retinal scans of 11 suspects recorded at Dubai airport.[66][67] Dubai's police chief has said "I am now completely sure that it was Mossad," adding: "I have presented the (Dubai) prosecutor with a request for the arrest of (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu and the head of Mossad," for the murder.[68]

At one time the IDF did great and heroic things too. Now we know what their primary only purpose is today. Your point being?

My point is that it is very bad for Mossad to have their agents revealed like this. That is what I originally wrote... You seem to think of this lightly. Do you really understand the difference between Mossad and Shin Bet? Mossad has, to this very day, been working hard to protect Jewish and Israeli interests in the international arena.

The most recent two Mossad operations were the attacks on the Iranian nuke scientists and last years assasination of the terrorist in Dubai. Can you point to anything which Mossad has done which goes against Jews and Israel? Then maybe I can understand what you are trying to say... Please explain what you think their primary purpose is today? And why do you think that?

Try to find any information where Mossad acted against Jews and post it here...

Here is a link to IsraelNationalNews doing a search for the word Mossad... I cannot find any reference to any action against Jews or Israelis..

We didn't leak names of US agents, insists WikiLeaks

WikiLeaks has sprung a "leak" that has reportedly resulted in the availability of unredacted copies of US diplomatic cables, according to German media outlets. WikiLeaks has admitted some sort of unspecified infosec problem while denying suggestions that its cache of US diplomatic cables has been exposed.

The whistle-blowing website has published carefully edited extracts of the cables in conjunction with its media partners since last autumn, creating a huge diplomatic and political fuss in the process. These extracts were carefully edited to remove sensitive data such as the names of US spies and informers.

Encrypted copies of the raw file were placed on WikiLeaks systems. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange™ reportedly shared the passcode to this file with trusted contacts.

German paper Der Freitag said last weekend that it had obtained access to the 1.73GB file (called cables.csv) and the passcode needed to decrypt it. Data contained in the file includes the names of US agents in Israel, Jordan and Iran.

Der Spiegel confirmed the leak and implied that OpenLeaks, a rival whistle-blowing website founded by disaffected WikiLeaks members last year, might have at least pointed Der Freitag towards the leaked file and password in a bid to highlight alleged security shortcomings at WikiLeaks. This remains unconfirmed.

I sure hope that any information leaked has protected the identities of agents engaged in espionage against the enemy.

The original US State Department documents obtained by WikiLeaks were accidentally leaked online revealing the names of sources that have thus far remained anonymous, German newspapers Der Spiegel and Freitag Der reported Monday. The names include possible Israeli, Iranian and Jordanian intelligence agents.

The unedited cables could put the sources in danger as many of them are located in countries whose governments are hostile to the US. The classified documents were edited before their distribution over six months ago, but the original key file which has been leaked reveals information originally censored by WikiLeaks editors.

Some are not concerned with the leak...  This report implies that it is not the names of Mossad agents which are compromised but possibly only diplomats... But if the original accusation is true then it is something to be concerned about.

Do WikiLeaks documents concerning Israel truly pose a risk? US security exerts maintained on Tuesday that confidential US State Department documents leaked online "have put individuals at risk," but Israel intelligence and security experts were not so quick to agree.

Israeli experts downplayed the security risk posed by the leaked documents, which name alleged Israeli, Iranian and Jordanian intelligence agents, but said that WikiLeaks has definitely taken a more brazen stand vis-א-vis Washington.

"The use of the word 'agents' is misleading," a veteran of the Israeli intelligence community told Ynet. "WikiLeaks is based largely on US State Department documents and they don't use agents – they have diplomats.'Agents' are people who potentially betray their county and may pay a heavy price for their actions.

"In this case, it's more likely the names are of people who have had lunch with American diplomats and then talked about it," he said.

Actually you are confusing the mossad with the Jewish division of the shin bet (aka the gss).

Mossad kills arab terrorists worldwide.

I think if the documents show that Mossad agents really are working with hostile powers to the USA then Americans should know about it. Or are they just IN those countries, possibly working against them?

Wikileaks is exposing corrupt governments around the world including in Israel. As for the Mossad, it is part of the Israeli Establishment that is crippling Israel.

Former Mossad Chief Meir Dagan is going around and trying to scare Israel into surrendering territory and stating that Israel cannot take out Iran's nuclear program.

There is no excuse for exposing information about agents... There is no defense of it. Mossad has done excellent work in the area of eliminating the enemy. Do you have any complaints about their dangerous operations? I don't...

I hope you just are talking about the diplomats... But agents are a vital resource for intelligence and there is NO EXCUSE for endangering their identities.

Key word former.  I don't believe the mossad instructs the prime minister, its the other way around.  The mossad is a tool.  And even by the leftist israeli govt they are used to eliminate muslim terror threats.  Sometimes, at least.
