A man has been described as a "bully with hatred in his heart" and jailed for nine months after making Nazi salutes at a Jewish teenager.

Zbignigw Lebek, 49, of Wrexham, also sang the names of the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Denbighshire.

He admitted a religiously aggravated public order offence.

The judge said it was as sickening an example of such behaviour that he ever had the misfortune to handle.

You made reference to one of the most horrific passages in the world's history, for fun”

Judge
Mold Crown Court heard an 18-year-old youth counsellor on summer camp in Caerwys, Flintshire, had taken a child to hospital following an asthma attack.

The teenager was wearing his kippah skull cap, and Lebek turned towards him, giving the Nazi salute.

He sang the words Auschwitz and Birkenau before walking up to the teenager and saluting again.

Judge Niclas Parry said: "For no reason other than sick pleasure you humiliated him and you demeaned him.

"You made reference to one of the most horrific passages in the world's history, for fun."

The incident was aggravated by the fact that it happened in a hospital, the judge said.

When police visited Lebek's home, they found a Nazi German flag with a swastika badge upon it.

'All this is rotten'
The judge added: "And the Nazi flag found only confirms, if confirmation was needed, the views you hold."

He told Lebek, who followed proceedings through a Polish interpreter, that it was a "case which exemplifies all that is decent in our society and all that is rotten in our society".

Judge Parry said the only real mitigation was Lebek's guilty plea.

He ordered that the flag be destroyed.

The court heard Lebek was in hospital on 31 August after he had been assaulted.

In interview, he said he did not remember much because he had been drinking, and because of his injuries.

Gwyn Jones, defending, said: "He can offer no explanation as to why he should act in such a way, when history has shown that his forefathers and the forefathers of the complainant suffered similar atrocities during a dark period of the history of the world."
