Well they may have chosen Kerry as the debate coach because he supposedly won a debate against President Bush, or at least that's what I remember a lot of people saying back when they debated in 2004, what a great debater Kerry supposedly was. But then he went on to lose the election. Hopefully Obama will do the same.
I guess Kerry did win at least one debate though overall he had pretty much ran a terrible campaign where he didn't try to counter any of the swift boat claims and what not.
