Police to investigate use of live fire during Peki'in clashes

Police will investigate why live fire was used against rioters in Peki'in early Tuesday morning during clashes which injured almost 40 people, Army Radio reported.

Clashes between villagers and police began after approximately 200 border police, as well as local police under the command of Galilee Subdistrict Chief Lt.-Cmdr. Nir Mariash, attempted to arrest a number of youth suspected of trying to burn down a cellular antenna.

Following the incident, MKs Dov Kheinin (Hadash) and Ahmed Tibi (Balad) called on Public Security Minister Avi Dichter to open an investigation into the riots.

"I'm amazed at the violence the police used against citizens who were protesting the construction of a cellular antenna," Tibi said.

Police said that they had received intelligence information indicating that in recent weeks the suspects in question had taken part in illicit demonstrations, rock-throwing, and even the use of grenades in order to protest the building of a cellular antenna on the roof of a local house.

Upon arriving in the town, the police encountered what they described as "stiff opposition" by dozens of youth, some of whom wore masks, who attempted to prevent the security forces from making their arrests. At least five of the protesters were detained.
In the violence that ensued between police and demonstrators, over 30 people were injured, at least 16 of whom were police. One officer was listed in serious condition after being hitting in the head by a rock, and a demonstrator was listed in moderate condition with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Police requested reinforcements, and then withdrew from the town to carry out a situation assessment under the charge of the Northern District Police chief.

Police said that commanders were currently conducting dialogue with the village elders in order to calm the waters.

Police responded Tuesday morning to claims that a policewoman had been held hostage in the village by explaining that the policewoman was given protection "at her request" in the house of a retired Peki'in police officer. Nevertheless, police emphasized that village elders and police succeeded in removing the officer from her location. She was taken to the nearby Mionah police station for a debriefing.

After the clashes subsided, police reported that a group of Peki'in youth set fire to the home of local Jewish residents. The house was damaged, but nobody was reported hurt. Peki'in is a mixed Arab-Jewish village.

Police said that the cell phone antenna in question was not on the roof of a house or synagogue as previously rumored, but had rather been installed on top of a chicken coop.
