The British government has just put through a law against "incitement to religious hatred", it did so at the request of muslims, so that muslims can take anyone to court who insults them due to their religion,
however, looking at the fine print of this new law, in the uk it is now illegal to stir up religious hatred, which is defined as:
"hatred against a group of persons defined by reference to religious belief or lack of religious belief."
Fine details of this new law are available here:
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2006/60001--b.htmI think they may have just accidentally made quoting certain parts of the koran, or distributing the koran illegal...
"Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." koran, surah 9, verse 5
N.B. Establish worship in this context means become muslim.
Though the above sounds like good news, there is the worrying side of it, it is quite possible now to be criminally charged in the UK for insulting Islam, although, such a case should not stand up as it should be relatively easy to point out the facts of the matter, and if you prove that you are telling the truth, they surely cannot send you to prison, it is still worrying that legal grounds exists for such a case.
