Prison, what is it good for?
« on: January 13, 2008, 05:01:03 PM »
Is prison a true punishment?

The people who have committed crimes have usually affected other people, so why should they go to prison and waste their lives, not having to pay for their food but instead be idle.

The real criminals need to give back to society what they have damaged.......through controlled labour work or schemes or anything else, what do you think?

Were there prisons at the time of Moses?

Surely, you're not advocating what schvartza terrorist Angela Y. Davis proposed in her book, Are Prisons Obsolete?

In thy power Almighty, trusting,
Did our fathers build of old;
Strengthen then, O Lord, their children
To defend, to love, to hold
That the heritage they gave us
For our children yet may be:
Bondsmen only to the Highest
And before the whole world free.
As our fathers trusted humbly,
Teach us, Lord, to trust Thee still:
Guard our land and guide our people
In Thy way to do Thy will.

No. To have a sentence of hard labour you don't need to be free. In fact, you have to face more then doing nothing much in an isolated prison. I didn't say people should serve sentences in the open either.

They can do useful things, in isolation and controlled places but the difference to being in a prison, is they're actually having to work to pay back what they've done.

Nothing is wrong with me, Serbchicago. You need to calm down.

Chaos comes with disorganisation. The fact that so many people are in prison, prove that the world is already chaotic.

They aren't proper punishments, because the people there have less things to worry about then those who are having to work, and earn money for their families etc

As far as criminals see it, they have a roof over their heads, don't have to slave their butts off and also are safe from whatever gang culture they would have previously been in.

Also, when these people come out of prison, most of them return to doing illegal things.....they haven't learnt a thing! They need to work to learn.

I personally think, that the punishment should fit the crime. Such as: A person steals: cut off a finger each time (I'd say hand, but let's be humane. ::)) A rapist: cut off or sew up the private area (depending on the sex of the criminal) The person loiters where they shouldn't: a toe each time (again, I'd say a foot, but let's be humane. ::)) I think you get the point. Jail is bullcrud, most criminals don't learn.

Exactly.

Though, i think that cutting limbs off is a bit extreme. If a person steals, he should do enough work to compensate 100 times for the person he stole from.

Nowdays, the criminal doesn't even have to pay anything back does he? No, the insurance company does that. While everybody else pays for the prison service, through taxes.

No, there certainly were not.

The only punishments in the Torah are fines, lashes and death.

No incarceration.

So could you say that prison is a liberal creation?

Though in Africa, i watched a documentary where people were lashed but still committed the crimes again and again because aside from the humiliation, they didn't mind the pain. It was bearable.

How can people be made to learn from their mistakes, or can't it be done by others?

Sarah: You're a better person than I am. I think that people being given work as compensation for a crime or crimes is too easy. Criminals will just blow it off. Are you American? Most criminal court cases get tied up in appeals, and it could take literally years before punishment is fully handed down.

Yes.

The occasional person who doesn't mind lashes is the exception to the rule.

Most people fear lashes more than prison.

No i'm not a better person at all. At the end of the day the criminals will probably commit another crime to pay compensation for the crime they've laready committed. ;D

It depends. With certain cases, criminal as well as civil charges can be brought against the perpetrator. We saw this happen with OJ. There were criminal and civil charges brought against him. The problem is that even if civil charges can be successfully brought against a perpetrator, many of them don't have the funds necessary to pay for the damages they pose anyway.

Now, you're getting into the spirit of it, Sarah.  Good question.  I think prisons have been around almost as long as man.  Their good can be debated.  In the States, their is a cable channel which always shows documentaries about prison, and they are indeed miserable places.  Thank G-d Chaim made it out in one piece.  I think they are ultimately necessary for truly evil and/or sick people who are a danger to others.  Still, I think having innocent people locked up, and there are indeed many innocent people who end up in jail, is one of society's biggest tragedies.  On some level, I leave it up to G-d to decide the guilt of innocence of man, but until that judgement is made, prisons appear to be a somewhat necessary evil.

Then why are you a Muslim? Islam has people's limbs cut off for stealing. And for worse things they behead people.

Yacov: If you mean I am a Muslim? ;D Not even close, I just suggested the punishments, because that the way I feel. I am 100% Jewish. 1/2 German and 1/2 Russian. Now, if you'll excuse me I feel the need to eat some Kosher Bratwurst, icy cold vodka and look through my Bar Mitzvah album! ;)

Now you are my kind of friend! O0
I believe, a STRONG government needs to be VERY strict when it comes to crime. Like as you said in the above Noland. If they do go to prison, they should work themsleves almost to death. Im talking about, the prisoners have to farm or do industrial work. So much so, if they bring in no money for the prison...they get no food! That's right, criminals have to pay the guards, food etc...through their work. If they don't...they die-which is good since we don't need criminals and LAZY crims. People, it will only take a few examples, and society will quickly get itself in shape.

But, it also comes down to society. A Righteous Government needs to be STRONG! They need to form a righteous society. Meaning things like...no filth on TV, no devilish music, no pornogrophy...so basically, a society based on the Torah/Bible.  If one fights the causes of crimes, on deletes crime.

I also feel that if you ask the most habitual offender why he/she commits crimes, their thoughts on jail and the financial effects on innocent taxpayers , they'll stand there  ;D at you. >:(

i don't know whay you are telling me to calm down, but ok.prisson was never to pay back anything it is punishmen for crime that was commited.you speed you get ticket, you commited a crime you have to go to jail.you know mostly liberals think that way,we don't need prisons but in all liberal states crime is to flore.you think it iseasy to be in prison, you are wrong and that is one of tactics to make you scare of commiting a crime, becose in the end of the road there is a punishment.and that is not truth that most of them return of doing illegal things, but if they do they go back in jail againe.it is one of way to protect us.caos come with disorganization,of corse and imagine world where there is no punishment, you try to organize that!it is not roof on they heads it is a prison, very violent place to be and if you are smart you will obey the law!
