Muslim cartoon causes rift between Denmark and Iran

Danish MPs have decided not to go ahead with a trip to Iran after they were ordered to apologise for the republication of cartoons deemed offensive to Islam.

Tehran had demanded the MP's condemn the cartoon on their arrival in Iran.

The controversy began when, earlier in the week, three men were arrested in Copenhagen for allegedly planning to murder cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

The following day, as a gesture of solidarity with the cartoonist, 11 Danish papers reprinted his now famous drawing depicting the Prophet with a bomb in his turban.

Iran's parliament said in a letter to Danish MPs: 'A condemnation and apology would help convince the Iranian people that Denmark's authorities had distanced themselves from the action.'

But the chairman of Denmark's foreign policy committee said it would be a violation of freedom of expression and the MP's would not apologise.

He said: 'If anyone needs to apologise for freedom of speech, human rights, imprisonments, executions and lack of democracy, it is the Iranians.'

Nine members of Denmark's foreign affairs committee were due to arrive in Iran on Monday for a three-day trip focusing on human rights and the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

In cases like these ;)

Ambiorix:
All newspapers republished the cartoons last week.
There was a muslim revolt in cities like Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus.
But nothing was said about it on the international media.
