Dying Kiwi's wife gives him half her liver
3:17PM Friday February 29, 2008

New Zealander Daniel Foster has hailed his Scottish wife as "the bravest woman", after she gifted him half her liver to save his life.

Jennifer Foster, 26, said she "didn't think twice" about offering to be Scotland's first live liver donor.

Both went under the knife at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary on January 16, eight months after they were married in Fiji last May.

Surgeons transplanted 60 per cent of Mrs Foster's liver into her husband.

Both operations started at the same time in nearby theatres.

It took five hours to remove part of the liver from Mrs Foster and a further 11 hours to insert it into her husband.

Mr Foster, 28, a massage therapist, still is recovering from the operation, though he has been discharged.

He told the BBC his wife was "the bravest woman in Scotland, she's incredible".

Mr Foster was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) 10 years ago .
