Depends on the quality of the airsoft gun, the higher end ones are 1:1 replicas of real firearms and strip down like the real thing, I suppose it'd be good for target practice though the FPS is somewhat low on them.

I would never recommend using an airsoft gun for self defense though.

Yeah, I meant for target practice... self defense hasn't been much of a concern to me here in the states...
but in the future if I make Aliyah it may be of more concern to me.

It should be a concern. Self defense is a number #1 priority, never rely on government to protect you.

Some indoor ranges may have guns you can hire whilst there.

A humble .22 will give you realistic training to start off with.

Try a crossbow.  They're very accurate and have good range.
