Police fled from immigrant gang…

Two policemen in Kalundborg was called out for a stolen moped yesterday (Monday), and they got hold of the moped. But when they wanted to hand it back to its rightful owner, a larger group of ill-adapted second generation immigrants, thought that it was a bad idea to give the owner the moped, and acted so threatening that the police used their pepper-spray against several of the “youths”.
After that the events escalated and the policemen had to seek refuge first in an stairway and then further up into an appartment, where the residents let them into security.
When reinforcements arrived from Ringsted and Holbæk, the “youths” had disapperead and the stolen moped that also for a brief moment were in the possession of the policemen were gone as well.

My question is where were the policemen’s sidearms? And why did they have to await reinforcements from as far away as Holbæk and Ringsted? Surely, Kalundborg, a city with a population of 20,000 (2006) must have more than 2 police officers on duty.
*** UPDATE ***
According to Jyllands-Posten today, the policemen didn’t flee into a stairway, the youngsters withdrew after being hit by the pepperspray, but one of the policemen got some of the pepperspray in his eyes and the police sought into the stairway and appartment to rinse the eye of the peppered policeman! After that reenforcements were called since eight of the youths came back. The newly arrived police was then quickly in control of the situation, and the immigrants dispersed without apprehension, but as they were known to the police, the police figures they’ll get them soon, and then having a chat with them…
The story still sounds a bit fishy to me, but I had higher thoughts about the police and didn’t think we had our own chapter of the Keystone Kops
