I think something to do with when the Jews went into Israel and they told Rehav (I think thats her name), to put some sort of red sign on the house, so she and her family would not be touched when the Jews would conqure the Holy Land. I think they derived from that, the whole red string thing, which I heard some real Rabbis say that it doesn't realy affect people, and its not affective (basicaly its bs).
