I don't worry much about Germany. After Hitler the people were so afraid of somebody miss-using the political system again, that it is very hard to influence politics without holding multiple key positions.
A bad guy can putsch anyway, but our founders liked it that way ...
The election will be in one year.
A lot can happen until then. But it looks good for Steinmeier.
The official candidate of his party isn't liked much and his party has the most possibilities to form a coalition.
The voter more or less decides who the coalition partners of the SPD will be.

You are really an optimist ;D
Next year will be a political constellation in Germany, that will be at least as evil for our cause as Obama. Never before in modern German history we have had this.
In the worst case Germany will be in a few years like the Venezuela of Chavez.
The economy will fall down under Red Red or Red Red Green and we will be in 1919 again. :( :( :(
