Recent comments by the chairman of the Australian Arabic Council, Roland Jabbour, are defamatory of the Jewish People, B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) chairman John Searle was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the ADC on Monday.

According to the statement, Mr. Searle said that Jabbour's defense of the Al-Manar television station's labeling of Jews as the offspring of apes and pigs is despicable.
"Roland Jabbour's claim, made in the name of the Australian Arabic Council, that anti-semitic blood libels and demeaning depictions of Jewish people are acceptable in the context of the perceived 'crimes of the State of Israel', is deplorable," he said.

"Australian Jews, like all other Australians, have the right to live without being subjected to this kind of vicious defamation. The ADC condemns all forms of racism including anti-semitism and works for a tolerant society that recognizes the right of people of all religions and backgrounds to live free from discrimination and abuse.

"The statements made by Roland Jabbour are dishonest and un-Australian and undermine our multicultural society. In light of his remarks, the ADC calls on Mr. Jabbour to acknowledge the dishonesty of the remarks, withdraw them unconditionally and issue an apology; or alternatively resign from his role at the Australian Arabic Council and pave the way for the appointment of a chairperson who is capable of working towards a harmonious, multicultural society.

"It is also disappointing that to date there has been no public disassociation from or criticism of the remarks by any other Arabic or Muslim organization within Australia of which we are aware."

The ADC chairman also called on the Australian Federal Government to look closely at Al-Manar television station and take whatever steps are necessary to prevent the dissemination of such racist, anti-semitic material which is designed to incite hatred in Australia.
