Giant Whale Buried in Haifa
30 Shevat 5767, February 18, '07

(IsraelNN.com) A Fin whale which washed ashore in Haifa on Friday was buried later in the day in a nature reserve on the beach. Dozens of people were present at the burial. The area has become a makeshift cemetery for sea mammals, and two other whales and one dolphin are also buried at the site.

The whale was approximately 12 meters long, and weighed five tons. Fin whales, which are the second largest species in the world, can reach lengths of up to 25 meters. Ecologists were surprised by the whale’s presence in Israeli waters, as Fin whales are rarely found in the eastern Mediterranean.
