Ask Judea Torah Show 11

Kahane-Was-Right BT:
Dear Judea,

It may be that this question will be answered above in Tzvi's inquiry but I just wanted to clear up a matter from two programs ago.  If one can say the haskevanu etc (as the typical standard siddur is composed) no problem and don't even really need to connect geula to tefillah at maariv, like you have answered in program 9, what was that whole discussion about in program 8 where you were saying that the Yerushalmi custom was to say the shema and hashskevaynu before going to sleep?   Did they do both, maariv and shema with minyan and then again at home before going to sleep?  And did they include hashkevaynu in the minyan tefillah?

Kahane-Was-Right BT:
When were the midrashim written?  Are they from Sinai as part of the Oral Torah?   Some are more applicable in a literal sense than others, as has been discussed on this program.   But I was wondering, if this was part of an Oral compendium of sorts for some time, and then only written down at a later date, when was it recorded (at same time as the Mishna?  Later generations?), and by whom was it written down?  One rabbi?  A set of rabbis?  Furthermore, do certain midrashim date back to an earlier time than others, and were some recorded (meaning written down) at different dates than others?   (Or is it 'all from Sinai' and 'all were recorded in writing later - together at one specific time').

q_q_:
you mentioned in the last program about it being visible in the machzor that ashkenazi customs show origins in Israel, talmud yerushalmi, and sephardi from bavli.    Are there any indications in a regular weekday and shabbat siddur?

Kahane-Was-Right BT:
I believe I heard in shiur this week that Chazal rebuke Sarah for castigating Hagar and kicking her out of her home as a response to the decrease in respect for Sarah and the inflated ego Hagar took on after mating with Avraham.   (Maybe the rabbi was referring to the second episode of Sarah vs. hagar which is actually in Vayeira)  Ie: Sarah's response was viewed negatively as sinful.   Perhaps it was an overreaction?  I was wondering if you had any insights on this matter, and do chazal give us any indication of how Sarah should have responded?
Edit:  Actually I took a look at the artscroll Chumash and none of the commentaries rebuke Sarah for her behavior but in fact, they defend it and put the blame on hagar.   I don't know why I was told her behavior was sinful.  Was it?

Tzvi Ben Roshel1:
I listined to the Shiurim you posted by your Rav.
I want to ask- About the size of the olive- i'm not exactly sure where it is written, but I was told that when the spies came back from Eretz Yisrael, they brought back with them very big fruits and vegetables with them from the land. And that the land produced very good, big sized produce, expecially fit for giants (and apparently some giants did live in E.Y. like Og in Bashan and the giants in Kiryat Arba).
Another thing- Also I believe it was mentioned in that shiur that the fruits and vegetables are the same as they were back then- But I believe it is written otherwise when the Tosfoth writes that the medical advice from the Talmud doesn't apply now (speaking I think about 900 years ago, Kal Vahomer now) because the foods have changed and our bodies changed (also I heard other things like the wine was much stronger back then, where they had to mix it with water).
My Rav also said that even a generation ago the foods had better quality to it. For example (and I also heard this from parents, and teacher) that chickens were better tasting (but maybe this might have to do with the whole American mass production vs. more natural foods).
Another thing connected to this- do you think that the medical advice by the Rambam should be strictly followed (as Halacha, or as advice?) And if he lived a long time ago (and in Egypt and then E.Y.- different climate then America for example) is his writing on this helpful for people in our generation?
Do you do things like eat and drink only sitting (and when he writes that does also include for example when one is working out or playing sports that they have to stop (for example running on treadmill), sit and then drink?
