Serbian-Israeli Friendship Group: Enhancing relations between Israel and Serbia

Initiated by the Serbian Committee of Foreign Affairs and its Chairperson, Ms. Gordana Čomić

Ms. Mel Polishook-Bloch and Ms. Erela Golan, members of Knesset, as Chairperson and member of Serbian Friendship Group in the Knesset, visited Serbia from September 5th to 8th 2005 according to the invitation of the Serbian-Israeli friendship group in the People's Assembly of Serbia.

Serbian-Israeli Friendship Group is the first such group established in the Serbian Parliament, initiated by the [Serbian] Committee of Foreign Affairs and its Chairperson, Ms. Gordana Čomić.

On September 6th two Chairpersons of Friendship Groups participated at the 16th meeting of the Israeli Business Forum and gave presentations on "Enhancing relations between Israel and Serbia".

Mel Polishook-Bloch assessed that "there are many areas in which Israel and Serbia could cooperate, for example telecommunication, agriculture, hi-tech, food processing, education, students and professors exchange, as well as joint ventures".
Presenting the economic development of Israel Polishook-Bloch stated that "the aim is for GDP to grow from 16.000 $ in 2002 to 29.000 $ in the next decade".

Gordana Čomić, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Serbian-Israeli Group of Friendship in the Serbian Parliament presented all the problems she thinks Serbia is faced with, like "bad heritage, destroyed economy, poverty, corruption, unemployment", but she also emphasized that "Serbia is straining to European integrations, establishing the rule of law and creating strong and competitive economy".

"In the period between 2000 and 2005 we achieved more than any other country in transition in the period between 1991 and 1996, since this is the period we are living in after 10 years we lost", said Čomić and added that "the biggest potentials of Serbia are educated work force, good geographical position and aspirations to be a leader in the region".
