Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to own a gun in New York.

In the N.Y.C limits that may be the case however long guns are still legal to own outside of the city and most folks with a clean record can be licensed to own hand guns.

By long guns, do you mean rifles?

I live smack in the middle of Manhattan.  So I guess those are not an option either.

The South, especially in FL and OK, has the best gun laws. I live in FL and I own 2 rifles, 1 shotgun, 4 pistols, a bulletproof vest and lots of ammo and accesories.

Yes  rifles. When I lived in Queens NY about 20 years ago it was legal to have a rifle in the city limits however it had to be registered with an agency I believe was called The Bureau of Tobacco and Firearms.

In Southern states you only have to register weapons that are fully auto.
