Indirect peace talks between Tel Aviv and Syria have been put on hold after the Israeli "massacre" of 300 people in the Gaza Strip. "It's the Israeli aggression in Gaza which has closed the door on all activity in the political process", AFP quoted a senior Syrian official as saying on Sunday.
Israel and Syria have so far held four rounds of indirect talks. Syria seeks the regime's withdrawal from the Golan Heights which has been occupied by the Israeli regime since the 1967 Six-Day war.
The last round of negotiations between the two sides, which were expected to be held in Turkey in September, was postponed due to internal Israeli crises.
Earlier last week the regime called on Damascus to resume Turkish-mediated talks which 'could lead to direct dialogue'.
The peace talks however stopped as Israel started massive offensive against the Gaza Strip since early Saturday. Its warplanes and helicopters pounded at least 30 different targets simultaneously, including schools, a television station as well as a mosque and prison across the coastal region.
Ankara which has been the mediator between Damascus and Tel Aviv, condemned condemned the deadly attacks which killed over 300 people and wounded around 1,000 others.
"To go and bomb these defenseless people, and to openly say that this operation will be a long-lasting one, that it will be this or that, to me, is a serious crime against humanity," said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had earlier said that the war would be "a long and difficult" one which will be "very painful."
