Israel on high alert at Lebanon border
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:21:42 PM »
Israeli Forces along the border with Lebanon have been put on high alert amid concerns that Hezbollah might respond to the onslaught in Gaza.
The Israeli daily Jerusalem Post reported Sunday that the military has been put on high alert after the ground forces crossed the border with the Gaza Strip following a week-long aerial and naval attacks on the region.

"Hezbollah will possibly fire rockets -- or use Palestinian proxies to do so -- in response to the Israel's escalation of its Cast Lead operation in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip", said the report.

Tel Aviv launched "Operation Cast Lead" against the Gaza Strip on December 27 and escalated the incursion into a ground offensive late Saturday.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had earlier said that Tel Aviv was "not interested" in a second front at the border with Lebanon.

"We are not interested in conducting a long war and we do not wish to conduct a war on a broad front," Olmert said.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has voiced concern over a possible reaction from the Lebanese resistance group in southern Lebanon, saying "We hope that the northern front will remain calm, but we are prepared for any possibility."

Israel fought a 33-day war against Hezbollah in summer 2006, but faced a heavy defeat after failing to achieve its goal of destroying the military power of the Lebanese movement.
