SRINAGAR, India:
Police in Indian-controlled Kashmir used tear gas and batons to disperse hundreds of angry protesters demonstrating Tuesday against Israel's strikes on Gaza, officials said.At least 30 people were wounded and 50 more were detained during the protest in Srinagar, Indian Kashmir's main city, a police officer said on condition of anonymity in keeping with department policy.
Kashmiri Muslims were originally marching to celebrate a Muslim holy day, but the several religious processions turned into one large anti-Israel demonstration in the city center. Protesters chanted "We're with Palestinians" and "Down with Israel," and carried photographs of Syed Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrilla group, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader.
Police fired tear gas and hit protesters with batons when they ignored orders to disperse, the officer said.Israel launched its offensive on Dec. 27 in a bid to halt repeated Palestinian rocket attacks on its southern towns. The campaign has been met with outrage across much of the Muslim world and there have been mounting international calls for an immediate cease-fire.
Indian Kashmir is a predominantly Muslim region where militant separatist groups have been fighting since 1989 to end Indian rule. The uprising and a subsequent Indian crackdown have killed about 68,000 people, most of them civilians.
