Milan Panić was born December 20 December 1929 in Belgrade. He later immigrated to the United States where he became a multi-millionaire. A Newport Beach and Pasadena, California-based business tycoon. He founded ICN Pharmaceuticals in the late 1950s and led it, as Chairman, CEO, and President, to annual sales exceeding $672 million (USD).

He served as Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1992-1993. He ran for President of Serbia in 1992 but lost to Slobodan Milošević. During the 1992 elections, Milosevic's news media branded him as a traitor and U.S. spy.

During his six-month tenure, the 63-year-old Mr. Panic consistently attacked Mr. Milosevic and other Serbian nationalists, calling for peace and compromise solutions to the war in Bosnia and the greater Yugoslav crisis. Vojislav Seselj, then leader of the Serbian Radical party, called Panic a traitor, "Some Government members are honorable and honest, but there are also traitors, especially Milan Panic", he said.

What would have happened had Panic been elected in 1992 instead of Milosevic? The war in Bosnia would likely have been over. U.S. relations with Serbia would have been better. What's certain is that had Panic been elected, things would have taken a different turn--perhaps a better life for the Serbian people and less suffering.

What is your opinion? Did Panic sell himself out to the Americans or was he simply trying to help the Serbian people and his homeland?
